ABSOLUTE POP PERFECTION 🔥🔥 No other words needed, this shit still cooks and slays hard after 3 years
This is THE song that brought me to Alvvays in 2022 and slowly made me a huge fan of the band (also saw them live early this year!). There's something so haunting and impactful when a deteriorating relationship is symbolized by an earthquake and a car crash, such as "The pulse of the brake light is the color of burning embers". The entire event unravels in hazy snapshots of pain and regrets, perfectly conveyed by Molly's dreamy vocals and evocative guitar riffs. THE BRIDGE ... read more
After Laughter always has a special part in my heart. When I saw Paramore in 2023, I shed some tears as Hayley asked someone from the crowd for their "Paramore saved my life" banner with their signatures because that meant a lot to the band. I very fortunately never got to the point to need someone "saving my life", but I partially credit Paramore a lot for me not getting to that point.
Any time I felt a bit down, directionless, unmotivated, stressed, frustrated, or ... read more
I‘ve never heard of Nilüfer before this weekend. My Method Actor is such a stunningly gorgeous album, what an absolute gem! I heard bits of many of my favorite artists - The Cure’s moodiness, 2000s Radiohead’s ambience, Big Thief’s brand of folk rock, The Strokes’ anxious guitar riffs, Beach House’s dreaminess, and Sufjan Stevens’ emotional vulnerability. Yet, Nilüfer's vocal delivery is so distinct and uniquely impactful. Also, I'm ... read more
Many songs get me going, but this is one of the few that **REALLY** get me going even after listening to it so many times for over a year. The hook is so crazy addictive. Abigail's vocals and harmony with fellow bandmates at the end are gorgeous. The horns in the last chorus are charming. The energy is just pure unadulterated fun. THAT FUCKING GUITAR SOLO FROM EMILY HOLY SHIT!!!! TLDP does some wizardry that rewires my brain chemicals in a way I keep coming back craving for more with ... read more
Wunderhorse's new album Midas doesn't really click too much for me after two listens, but Rain is a great standout, especially that build up towards the end with the drum crescendo, distorted guitar riffs, and passionate vocals.
I honestly don't give two shit about Foreign Spies, but Zero Sum is absolutely bonkers. Zero Sum is an adrenaline rush I need injected into my veins because whatever Jonny did with the guitar riffs is just pure magic (even better than Thin Thing). Tom's groovy drumming and that horn section during the bridge keep me returning to the track craving for more. The only criticism is this song is too damn short. Still manifesting for Radiohead LP10 but Zero Sum makes me slightly more ... read more
No way, now I'm convinced Black Midi hiatus is just a hoax to promote Geordie's solo project 😂 But seriously, this shit is so insane. The unpredictable and theatrical blend of prog rock and jazz is as expected for the Black Midi frontman, but Geordie brings in a more melodic and rhythmic flavor to the sound in his solo debut. It's in some sense catchier and groovy than most Black Midi songs I've listened to, like I genuinely really want to dance to this. I'm so ... read more
Out of all the singles from Imaginal Disk, this is probably the catchiest in terms of getting me on the dancefloor. Holy fuck the bass is so damn groovy. That distorted outro really slaps. I’m just so happy to be alive in the same era as Mag Bay and ready to make Imaginal Disk my personality for the rest of this year :)
Who needs espresso when you can get some espresso martini 🤪 (I do like espresso though hehe). Hot damn, what can I even say here… It’s about time for my first album review on AOTY after lurking on this site for years.
“Imaginal Disk” is worth all the hype I’ve had since the release of the phenomenal lead single “Death and Romance”, one of my few 10/10 songs of 2024. “Mercurial World” has been one of my favorite pop records of the decade ... read more
Phenomenal. SOTY contender. Raye's music is not my usual taste, but I love her expressive vocal delivery and brutally honest vulnerability so much. The vivid imagery of depression and anxiety gripping a person at their neck in the first verse is so haunting. Relatable personal confessions of social media obsession, validation seeking, alcoholism, drug addiction, and mental health trouble within a wider picture of social and political instability, followed by an epic playful jazzy ... read more
HERE COMES THE FEMININE URGEEEEE, I KNOW IT SO WELL!!!
TLDP is so good at writing compelling melodies and the harmony in the last 30 seconds or so is 😚👌Maybe not as punchy as some of the other singles but easily up there as one of Prelude to Ecstasy's best.
I've felt so indifferent to romantic love for years and this song makes me want to love and be loved again.
Infectious tune with very enjoyable psychedelic instrumentation and production. Still my favorite from Loss of Life.
Hot damn, that last chorus is absolutely eargasmic!!! This album's gonna slap so fucking hard I can feel it already
I have a strong feeling Good Luck, Babe! will stand as a 2024 classic in a few years, instead of being buried within a heap of "just vibes" pop hits of this era (many are quite good this year, but I bet won't be as memorable). Easily hit of the year so far imo.
Inject this shit straight into my vein! The vocals, melody, and production are insanely euphoric, which is apt for song titled death & romance. I've had this song on replay for a full month and it's still as addictive as the first listen. Huge contender for SOTY.
This is the first time I've ever heard of The Crane Wives, but the raw passion, pain, and hope conveyed by Kate's vocals completely resonate with me during the first listen of "Arcturus Beaming." The build up towards the burst of emotion of "Nothing will change until I change" followed by a powerful instrumental outro is very cathartic. The lead guitar melody is so beautiful and mesmerizing, backed by stellar mixing with the other instruments. This becomes an ... read more
