It's fine! Not necessarily my kind of thing to be fair, but I like Mars' voice, and 'I Just Might' was a banger single. It's solid and brief, but never particularly memorable outside of some very good instrumentation.
The BoC album I've listened to the most by default of owning it on CD back in the day. Nothing super creepy on here, but more beautiful and subdued and hazy and nostalgic. Quite long and has a few unmemorable tracks, but those are minor nitpicks. Love the way the final track still keeps playing at a barely audible volume in the last half, that used to freak me out in a strange way, but I grew to find it calming. Lush album.
Banging. Abstract in an accessible way, hypnotically groovy, warm yet eerie, ambitious and sumptuous. Missed these guys.
I don't really get Gorillaz musically, I love the aesthetics and story behind it all, but most of their music bores me to tears. There's some bangers on here, such as 'Damascus', and that final track is effectively affecting. But I just find myself struggling to connect with most of it, a lot of cool elements that I like that just don't come together to form interesting songs.
For the first six tracks or so I was like "This is great! These are all bangers!" But then nothing changes, the majority of the songs are just sketches with no progression or variety, and they just keep going. If these songs were filled out, like 'LOVE YOU LESS' is, this could have been so good. As it is, it's a bit of an endurance test.
Haven't seen the film so I can only rate this on it's own merits, but it slaps, feels like an experimental dance-pop concept album and I love it. 'Dying for You' is lodged firmly in my head for, probably, forever.
An absolute stormer. I'd never gotten into Megadeth the same way I had Metallica and Slayer, but going back and checking out their early work, I totally get the hype. Vocals are a bit of a sore spot for me, but I don't mind them anymore, and the songs, the technicality, the sheer force of it all, is incredible.
Fair play to Dave Mustaine for making this in the throes of cancer, and also accepting when he probably needs to call it a day, but this is sadly not good. The songs are lacking in energy, which would be okay if they were interesting elsewhere, but they're not. It just comes across as poor grunge/alt-rock, very little thrash here, and the production is incredibly sterile. Some people have mocked the lyrics, and while they are not good, it is kind of nice that Mustaine is attempting ... read more
Listened to as the bonus tracks on 'Killing Is My Business...', the production is predictably garbage for a demo, but my God, these songs rule. They go so hard, and the impressiveness of it all is even more stark when compared to the painfully below-average latest and last album.
The songs in of themselves are pretty great, but that murky and monotonous production makes it all feel rather samey by the end. Still cool though, and 'Look Away's opening riff is such a banger (one the rest of the album can't quite live up to.)
Mostly solid. There area few duds like 'STAY HERE 4 LIFE' (which seems to be one of the higher rated tracks here, so maybe I'm out of touch), and some lulls, but when it's going hard and energetic it rules. That bass on 'AIR FORCE (BLACK DEMARCO)' is nuts, the backing of 'ROBBERY' is so cool, 'STFU' is almost incredible but let down by some weird vocal production. The end, appropriately titled 'THE END', is also a showstopper, Jessica ... read more
It's pretty good! Not really familiar with J. Cole's stuff, but I listened to this and his most recent album. It's not the kind of thing that excites me, but it's very solidly executed, good beat and sample choices, actual songwriting, some socially conscious stuff, pretty enjoyable. Bit too long for my tastes, but I had a good time.
The first verse goes legit pretty hard, and the chorus is kind of sick, quite clipping.-esque. Too silly to demand repeat listens, but surprisingly adequate for a purposefully-bad joke song.
Liked this more than I thought I would, I was very disappointed with her last record and that overproduced Jordan Fish sound, which of course this still has, but I found the songwriting to be a bit stronger. The opening track brings back some trademark Poppy weirdness, though maybe slightly overdoes it and not in a charmingly absurd way like 'Concrete,' but it was still nice to hear some of the quirkiness back. Most of the songs have a generic pop-metal sound that I imagine Spiritbox ... read more
