3/28/26: 95->93
The definitive instrumental hip hop and plunderphonics album of the 90s and a true pioneer in the fields of sampling and turntablism as art forms. "Midnight in a Perfect World" is regarded as one of the best songs ever for a reason and I would put "Building Steam with a Grain of Salt" right behind it. Everything else on here is enjoyable and interesting to listen to even at some moments it feels a little long (especially on "Napalm Brain/Scatter Brain"). This is an album that I can only imagine to be absolutely groundbreaking at the time and still has a quality that makes it sound truly timeless and able to find its way to its proper audience at any point in time. The drums especially on so many tracks hit like sledgehammers in such an enjoyable way you can't help but turn the volume up. DJ Shadow seemingly never hit these same heights again but this album is inseparable from his legacy and contributions to so many genres and artists.
