Aerosmith - Get a Grip
20

It's amazing... the amount of cringe you can have on a single album.
I believe this was their biggest success as well (besides Walk this way). MTV was obviously big in those days.

Only one likeable track for me on this one: Walk on down.

Ekatarina Velika - Dum Dum
90

Some of the less accessible works from EKV. The songs are darker as the themes are clearly influenced by the pre-war atmosphere which was omnipresent in the balkans at that period.
Personally, i got hooked on it for a long period. In retrospective, there was some cold wave vibe through the whole album. A sens of emptiness that is characteristic for bands such as Bauhaus but with layered compositions which EKV had the magic formula.
As with all EKV albums, it's a snapshot of their creative ... read more

Warrior Soul - Drugs, God and the New Republic
90

Few albums made an impact on me as this one. I used to put on repeat Intro and the cover from Joy division's Interzone. One of my all time favorite opening to an album.
The rest of the album is a hard rock (quite reductive but i''m lacking a better word) explosion with social conscientiousness. It's bleak, hard, Clark's vocals are dirty and "they rock n' roll!"
It's funny to hear Donal T. being mentioned in '91 (Wasteland). Some things never ... read more

DEADLETTER - Hysterical Strength
85

They sound like they don't care, they sound unimpressed, they're bloody talented and the sax is fantastic.
I needed this.

ROSALÍA - LUX
70

I'm not familiar with Rosalia's previous works so i gave this album a shot free of any comparison. It's a clearly well produced record and i could feel the intention to make something deeper and diversified.

As somebody who listens music in different languages on regular bases, the fact that are several languages involved wasn't really impressive. To clarify, the whole album has such an overwhelming influence of Fado/Flamenco (which is a good thing) that i didn't took ... read more

Candlebox - Candlebox
80

Candlebox were from Seattle and when this album came out it got a lot of hate for not being grunge enough. Too polished, to radio friendly, too accessible etc.
Wrong time, wrong place syndrome. Other than that, it's a great rock album with strong vocals, guitars and no weak track on it.
It doesn't have the originality or the complexity of some other albums that came from that era but it's honest approach sounds right and should, in my opinion, be given more consideration.

Tame Impala - Deadbeat
30

I'm always in for an artist who tries something different but this just feels like a proper misfire. Talented enough to make something out of songs which are lacking substance but, in the end, it's all very forgettable.

Maybe better next time...

Urge Overkill - Exit the Dragon
100

Following the bands commercial and critical peak with Saturation, which was a great catchy power pop album, Exit the dragon came out and it was evident from the first track that UO didn't intend to repeat themselves.
They delivered a much deeper, darker and rawer collection of songs which, 30 years later, still sound powerful as it did back then.
It might be less immediate than its predecessor but i find it aged better and it deserves to be discovered.

In short, Exit the dragon is one of ... read more

dEUS - In a Bar, Under the Sea
100

There's so much happening on this album and it sounds even better after all these years.
A masterpiece.

Personal fav: Fell off the floor, man.

Anthrax - Sound of White Noise
85

I still remember the surprise when i first heard the album. I was expecting to hate it. I mean, how can you replace the Belladonna and his specific vocal signature?
Well, it was something completely different and it worked for me. I love Bush's voice and the songs are actually well written in my opinion.
I still listen to it from time to time.

Amyl and the Sniffers - Cartoon Darkness
85

Confident, smart, fun and it rocks!
The best antidepressant you can get right now.

Noir Désir - 666.667 Club
90

The legendary french band's follow up to the classic "Tostaky" is an impressive collection of inspired rock songs.
As on most of Noir desir's albums, the songs in english are a bit underwhelming but the french songs are instant classics. Massive!
The storming intro with "Fin de siècle", the dark "Un jour en France", the beautifully written "A ton étoile", the melancholic punk rock on "Comme elle vient", the low tempo ... read more

Soundgarden - Louder Than Love
60

Some good stuff but definitely a "still to be polished" period of Soundgarden.
It always comes to a subjective appreciation and this one never grew on me... Still very interesting to hear to appreciate how Badmotorfinger was a giant impovement in every aspect.

The Cult - Electric
95

My favorite Cult album, actually, one of my favorite rock albums ever. This is how a rock album should sound. Imperfect, dirty and straight to the point. I get that people who loved Love were dissapointed when the record came out though. It was a different band.
Anyway, Rubin's magic worked well on this one.

Riblja Čorba - Istina
90

Bora left the building on this day so i wanted to do a review in honour of an important, yet divisive, songwriter.

I was never a huge fan of Riblja Corba but some songs followed me through my childhood and early adulthood, especially this one since a lot of friends of mine loved it.

I believe this is the first album after Bajaga, a creative force within the band, left to work on some cheesy pop. So, it can be considered as the first album of the "new era" which brought the 80s ... read more

Jack White - No Name
95

Well, i didn't see this one coming.

After several albums which were probably good but just weren't my thing (i guess), i gave a go to this album for the old time sake.
I mean, i always respected JW for the way he didn't compromise but did whatever he wanted so i would listen to his new work systematically without any expectations. I don't even remember the last few albums...

So, imagine my surprise while i was listening to this collection of dirty, direct, groovy and ... read more

Fontaines D.C. - Romance
90

How to evolve without sacrificing what defined you artistically?

Well, Fontaines DC are at their 4th album and they still find a way to experiment new horizons while keeping the essence of what they were loved for in their beginning.

I saw them live recently and listening to the old stuff mixed with the new album only accentuate the feeling of a coherent sound evolution.

Well done! Great album.

Protomartyr - Relatives in Descent
90

Protomartyr have been providing us with brilliant music for some time now and it still feels as they're underground band coming with their first release. And that's a good thing.
Relatives in Descent is now 7 years old and other great albums followed in the meantime, which cemented Protomartyr as one of the best American bands.
I could've pick any other album to review but i kept coming back to this one over the years so it seemed the best suited to start with.

The albums opens with the dark ... read more

Jeff Buckley - Grace
100

When I think more than I wanna think
I do things I never should do
I drink much more that I oughta drink
Because it brings me back you

Stone Temple Pilots - Purple
85

I know exactly where i was when i first heard Vasoline.
There was a big debate at the time following the Core album. STP were accused of copying Pearl Jam or pretending to be grunge (whatever that means).
Then Purple came out and, in my view, they came as a completely different band. I think i still have it on tape somewhere, completely used.
