Bob Dylan's voice has never sounded rougher than it does on 2012's Tempest. For a while, I just accepted that this was because of age, but that line of thought went out the window upon hearing his Sinatra trilogy (2015-2017) and Rough & Rowdy Ways (2020). So why does he sound like he's gargling razor blades in Tempest? Granted, his voice isn't terrible, it's nowhere near as bad as his voice on something like Good As I Been To You (1992), but it doesn't ... read more
1990's Under the Red Sky was so bad, it threatened to blow up the universe. Dylan's subsequent release, 1992's Good As I Been To You, is the music equivalent of unplugging the alarm clock and plugging it back in to reset it. It's an album that's back to basics, in more ways than one. The sound is purely acoustic, not a single other instrument. But also the songs featured here are very basic, like traditional pieces I'd expect to hear in a music for beginners ... read more
It's unfortunate that Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid is so slept-on, but it was inevitable since it's a movie soundtrack consisting almost entirely of instrumentals. This album is most famous for originating "Knockin' on Heaven's Door", but in all honesty, the instrumentals are the highlight for me. Each one has it's own distinct flavor and instrumentation, with "Cantina Theme" being relaxed and bass-heavy, "River Theme" being punctuated ... read more
I've always considered Another Self Portrait (2013) to be an integral addition in the Bootleg Series. Between this, Springtime in New York (2021), and Trouble No More (2017), it's an installment that seeks to rehabilitate a controversial period of Dylan's career. This time, the period in question is the 1970 release of Dylan's Self Portrait, an album that was despised by critics. Another Self Portrait also heavily covers material from his subsequent album New Morning, and ... read more
The one that started it all... I hate when people say that, like what a brilliant observation (not). I don't think 1962's "Bob Dylan" deserves any credit for being the first. For a long time, this was my least favorite Bob Dylan album and I barely touched it again after listening to it once. The upcoming release of Through the Open Window has gotten me in the mindset that I need to reappraise this album. Is it still my least favorite after a more thorough examination? ... read more
