The abundance of derivative electronic tricks diminishes Beautiful's successful updates of Garbage's sound.
It's good in flashes ... but frighteningly unstable.
Beautiful Garbage does show some glimpses of the talented songwriting Garbage have displayed in the past.
Garbage transitions into straight-up pop and it’s … good? Yes, I’m actually kind of shocked. Beautiful Garbage is often viewed as the record that ended Garbage's career and I can see that. Oh what could've been had Garbage tossed their alt rock guitarisms aside completely and leaned into this weird kaleidoscopic pop trash. It knows when to pull punches and make hooks count. As earnest and cheesy as ever, this is the sound that best suites Shirley's lyrics.
Breaking Up The Girl is perfect.
Each time I listen to this I like it a bit more, I think I actively disliked it on release so it has only taken 25 years to rise up to this point!
The change for a more pop rock influenced album wasn't actually that bad of an idea for Garbage, because I liked how Shirley still had her badass moments and change of voice in some songs like "Shut Your Mouth" or "Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go!)" which were still bangers. The album is still very good, just not as badass and good as the self titled album and Version 2.0.
