Stygian Hollow - Self-Titled

This was a treat. An intimate and intricate sounding collection that has this modern folk vibe. Kind of a soft whisper with some groovy bits. It's got more of a poetic feel. Makes me think of someone like Harold Budd. Not so much in how they sound, but more about a marriage of poetry and minimalist sounding music. I also get a little Daniel Johnston. But I'm no expert.

Anyway, my favorite tracks were the instrumental "Rogue Flowers Among Fields of Wheat" and "Between ... read more

What a fun, catchy, hook filled thing this record is. The music is so brisk and alive that it allows the darker lyrical subjects of these songs to almost feel satirical. This is definitely not in my wheelhouse, but I liked some of the dreamy, ambient stuff here. The album has interesting overlapping sounds and beats. The vocal track seems almost disassociated as the bass vibrates.

"Better" sounds great, "Mantra" is clever, "Skeleton" has this crazy distortion that makes it stand out. The entire album blends together nicely. I probably miss some of the subtleties but ovwrall these tracks feel personal and introspective.

I enjoyed this little EP of 4 tracks introducing me to Shea. Highlights were "Pangea" and my favorite track "City North" which is a keeper as far as I am concerned. I love how it sounds like haunted harmonies buried under fuzzy guitars. They blend indie pop/dream pop with shoegaze and noise in a way that I like.

Upon first listen these songs seems to reflect on relationships gone wrong that are still unresolved and self-discovery. It's reflective and seems haunted by ... read more
