Wait, What Did You Say? - Stay Safe, Little One.

This is really good. Its fuzzy, a little rough around the edges, and perhaps feels a bit like a demo, but I feel like those are all positives.

And there is no denying how these songs can finds a hook and bounce it's way along these fairly depressing songs about relationships, self-doubt, self-loathing,, and all the ways a person can be left emotionally drained and crestfallen. Ut man can it and upbeat and frenetic. Kind of like the band Sugar, with some Weezer gift for riffs and a touch ... read more

Craig Wedren - The Dream Dreaming

Eclectic Singer/Songwriter stuff disguised as indie pop. It's mature, clever, kind of witty, with songs about getting older and how that colors your view of life, love, sex, and isolation (probably Covid related). Sounds like someone who makes weird music trying to make it a little less weird. Because this gets weird. Orchestras, feedback, electronic buzzes, wild vocals, surreal lyrics, all with a pop shell. It's like a Kinder chocolate where the outside is this dreamy, catchy pop and ... read more

Josh Abbott Band - Somewhere Down The Road

Country with rock and indie styles blended along with some bits of electronic music, reverb, and autotune. There is a twang here that sounds good paired with lyrics about bad decisions, tough luck, love, and getting drunk. It's catchy and sounds like a bar band at times, but it's also fairly intricate with these really cool takes on modern country. I didn't click with all of this, but a few tracks stood out to me. "Astronaut", "The Sale", and "What Were ... read more

Magnum - Here Comes the Rain

Throwback 80s rock. This one is sort of dramatic, has all the bits and pieces from all those 80s bands that rocked with flair and melodrama. It doesn't really work for me, but it was fine with a couple of highlights. A fun time.

Shed Seven - A Matter of Time
70

This is a good rock album. It wears some 60s influences on its sleeve, and give off some Beatles vibes, but it also blends 90s rock, shoegaze, dance-rock, and even sounds a little 2010s-ish. I kept thinking of Neon Trees as I listened to this one.

It really sounds good. And timeless. Songs about love, possibly drugs, and life from an older perspective set to catchy rock hooks and jangle-pop isn't a bad thing.

Pleasant mix of country, pop, and indie pop. Very comforting and warm. Catchy. Heartfelt. Authentic. Clever. Sometimes the production sounds fairly familiar like a lot of other music released over the last decade or so. But this album also has a little Jenny Lewis in it, and resembles some throwback 90s country like Lyle lovett.

I liked this one. "Jealous Moon", "When the Lights Go Out", and "Don't Break Down On Me" are highlights but "Columbus & ... read more

The Reytons - Ballad Of A Bystander

This is okay. Overall, it really wasn't doing it for me, but I dug "Market Street" and "Not Today Mate".

Kevin Gates - The Ceremony

Thos is a rap album with pop sensibilities that has got some great production value, backing tracks, and a solid cadence that's engaging, confrontational, and strong. Not every track works for me and it's full of contradicions. "Lil Yea", "Letter 2 My Fans", "Protect Children", "Walmart", "I Don't Apologize", and "Broken Men" were tracks I liked.

Chemtrails - The Joy of Sects
85

Punkish, popish, glam, well polished and biting songs that sound like a band that overdosed on Blondie, the Pixies, The Ramones, and The Cramps. It has elements of punk stylized surf rock and doo wop in here too, all done at a fast pace. Absurd satire. Songs about death cuts, pink whales, and the end of the world while the vocals harmonize perfectly. It's wild, fun stuff and I loved this entire album.

PACKS - Melt The Honey
90

Catchy, moody, lazy Sunday lo-fi magic happening here. There's a clatter to some of these songs that make it sound like they hit record and didn't worry too much about what they picked up in the background. There's a natural, easy vibe to this that I love and the songs are catchy. Minimalist.

Link's voice and style remind me of Lucinda Williams. Pixies. Guided by Voices. Stuff like that. Kind of slow burn stuff here. Slightly Psychedelic and obsessed with obscure history. ... read more

EKKSTACY - ekkstacy

Indie pop/rock post punk catchy sad music that's got some cool beats. There's a few good riffs here though, but it does sound familiar. A lot of bands make this kind of music and sound like this. That's not a bad thing, but there wasn't enough to stand out to me even though I dug a few of these songs.

VACATIONS - No Place Like Home
65

This is a ultra catchy, fun, familiar sounding indie rock/pop album. I like the vocals and the almost wall of sound kind of thing the do here with layers of hooks and riffs, but if I'm being honest, this is a sound and style I feel like is pretty ubiquitous and it doesn't do enough to make me take notice. There are good tracks here and I think it's a good record, it just doesn't do it for me where Id be seeking it out. "Next Exit" was probably my favorite song ... read more

Gruff Rhys - Sadness Sets Me Free

This one was a gem. Very eclectic. Kind of an indie chamber pop, but this one covers a lot of genres and can sound like a lot of different things. He changes his vocal style up, from a Leonard Cohen type thing to a falsetto soul-pop to this almost Lou Reed style of talk-singing. It keeps you on your toes. It's clever, creative, a little biting, and sardonic. It's sad music that lends this sense of optimism. Thought provoking, smart lush, and witty. A 9/10 because he's Welsh and ... read more

Nailah Hunter - Lovegaze

Real interesting indie pop kind of album with trippy bits, hip hop beats, gorgeous ethereal vocals, a harp, and music that rides a crescendo to a rousing conclusion. Sometimes she sounds like Judy Garland or Billy Holliday against a trap beat. It's solid and different and artsy. Comes across like intergalactic space poetry, but also, like Hunter is some earth mother high priestess. I dug it, but it's a vibe and a mood you have to be up for.

Dead Poet Society - FISSION
65

Kind of a throwback late 90s/early 2000s rock band. Heavy bass. Thick guitar riffs. Wild vocals that don't always go where you think they will. A little touch of hardcore, but melodic.

They remind me of bands like Lincoln Park, Staind, Fall Out Boy, Queens of the Stone Age, and Kings of Leon.

There are a few good tracks here. "Hurt", "Tipping Point", "Hard To Be God", and "Black and Gold" worked for me.

Backyard Apologies - Safe Travels
65

A real DIY sounding indie rock album that I found to be pretty solid. It's all rough and unpolished but that's part of the appeal. It's raw, kind of funny in spots, and raucous. It has a 90s noise rock vibe at time. Melodic and chaotic. It's got something interesting changes too.

It didn't all work for me, but I liked "Not About Shoes", "Changes", and "Summer Crisis".

Monzack - Lights Under A Shed
80

This is a real smooth groove of an album. Instrumental beats and music that feel lile a slow jam and a classic backing track to some 70s R&B and Soul music. It finds its hook and digs in. There's also some jazzy and Funky bits that warm this up. I loved having this on while I cooked a meal and playing it makes me feel a lot cooler than I am.

My favorite was "Wild Tiger", but I also enjoyed "Rim", "Esperanza", "Why Now.", "Hang It ... read more

Kaho Matsui - nightmare intercom

This was a fascinating experimental kind of album that blends an acoustic singer/songwriter style with electronic music, ambient sounds, and effects that give this an almost alien feel. It is like there are these really intimate vulnerable sad songs behind a thicket of bushes made of sound. I like that. It elevates it from simply being a sad song played on a guitar and turns it into something more layered.

I like the imagery some songs invoke as well. Titles like "West Facing ... read more

I've always liked those songs that start off quiet and then explode into noise. This one also sounds very rough around the edges, which I like. Gives it more emotional weight. I like how the vocals get buried under the music at times when it's at its most frenetic.

Having said that, this isn't really resonating with me beyond "Entitlement" which I found to be a solid quick burst of a song. "Sunday" is also very good. Still, it's a fine EP that gives you ... read more

Feels Like Heaven - Within Dreams

A melodic hard rock album that has a few moments that I really enjoyed. Like parts of "Volvo (On the Road)" has Dinosaur Jr/Mudhoney vibes. But I'm old school. So my references could be dated.

It's got chunky riffs that power through, and the drums just never, ever stop. The vocals sometimes veer too into screaming hardcore for me personally. But that's just a preference. For me, when it hits those harmonies it sails.

Highlights for me were "Volvo (On the ... read more
