This is a pretty difficult album for me to talk about because A) Not familiar with Bad Bunny's catalog and B) Understanding the intimacy and cultural importance of this record only on a contextual level. My inability to understand Spanish dampens my ability to fully understand and process the meaning behind theses songs. Having said that, what I heard I really liked. It is a very varied record and he never stays on one idea too long, and the production is top-tier. NUEVAYoL is a great ... read more
Coming from someone who didn't check out Preacher's Daughter but understood the impact it had, I am wildly surprised to find out that this is the follow-up. As I understand Precher's Daughter aligned itself as a kind of darker Florence + The Machine, and with Perverts Ethel Cain shows that she will not trap herself in one sound over the other. Songs like Punish and Amber Waves are a bit more normal songs that her fans would typically enjoy, but then you got Perverts, ... read more
Coming from someone who is not a fan of Lil Baby and really did not like his 2022 project My Turn, I thought this was fine. Dum, Dumb, and Dumber and Stuff are easily the best songs on this project thanks in turn to the features, but there is something about the production of those songs that feels much more full than the rest of the project. There are bad songs and boring songs but they don't stand out enough to drive the score down. It's an ok project which in its own way says a lot.
Father John Misty always impresses me whenever he does anything. The way he sings, writes, and composes always makes whatever he makes sound like it would be given as a sermon in front of a religious gathering. Go figure that is the same case here. The title track, I Guess Time Makes Fools of us All, and Screamland all have this angelic vibe to them. All except for She Cleans Up which sounds like a Spoon song (not an insult I love spoon). This is pretty worth the hype, go check it out.
I really expected this to be a chill Friday. Maybe put on some Kim Deal or Father John Misty. I was literally sitting at my gate scrolling through Spotify to pick something to listen to and then I got a text from my roommate that Kendrick dropped. And here we are. I heard some people saying that there was no rollout but truthfully all of 2024 was the rollout, and the album sounds like it. He sounds like 2024 has aged him and now he is speaking from outside the boundaries of war. But above all ... read more
Damn, this fucking rips! I only checked this one out because November 7th was a pretty weak release week but consider me surprised that the best thing to come out of that week was an EP. This is so intense, and heavy, and it doesn't overstay its welcome. Obviously, I wish this was album length, but I still think this is just right for what it is.
It's simple, short, and sweet. Unlike some of his more recent work, this is just Justin Vernon and a few instruments. The highlight here is definitely THINGS BEHIND THINGS BEHIND THINGS and the other songs are pretty good too. I do wish this could have been an album instead of what just sounds like a teaser.
I first heard She's Leaving You on the radio and knew this was going to be a good vibe. It's not the most complex storytelling in the world, but there is such a melancholy to the whole experience. It also rips at points. I am in love with the guitar tones on this record they have so much personality. As someone who really only started to appreciate Slacker Rock recently, this is a great modern addition to the genre.
This has been an incredible year for Noise Rock. Chat Pile, Foxing, and now Uniform. These songs to me are less about the big sludgy riffs and more about the atmosphere they bring. The self-titled opener American Standard is a feat, to say the least. I am usually one to gravitate towards long-ass songs but I thought the song could have been streamlined a bit. The rest of the record is pretty fantastic. Clemency and Permanent Embrace are great examples of this band's ability to demand ... read more
Ok, I first want to clarify that anyone claiming that Emily Armstrong is the problem with this record is making a bad-faith argument. No one could fill the shoes that Chester Bennington left behind and for my money, Emily does a damn good job filling in. Having said that, this album falls short in a lot of aspects. These songs are commonly overproduced and lack what I enjoy most about Linkin Park: grit. I love the songs that have an edge to them. That is why my favorite track here is probably ... read more
This is pretty easily my pop album of the year, and in a year that has arguably given us some of the best pop music of the decade so far, that is massive praise. I first want to shout out the bass playing, damn it is so good. It is so prevalent and does so much to carry and drive the groove deep into your soul. Also the writing is top-tier. Death & Romance is my personal favorite song for this reason specifically. It is just a perfectly written pop song. This is all especially big praise ... read more
Ok, first of all, authenticity in country is dead and has been dead for a long time. That is not the problem with this record. The problem is that it is just soulless. There is nothing here that piques my interest beyond a few melody decisions (I hate to say this but the best song is I Had Some Help and that is coming from a massive Morgan Wallen hater). I am sad that the Dolly Parton song isn't great, I think the Hardy feature is laughable, and I am bored with other country star features. ... read more
I've been a fan of Parannoul since I checked out their breakout record To See the Next Part of the Dream, which I loved. I have heard that After the Magic was also damn good, and for this to be the latest release, I don't think Parannoul can't miss. From the incredible opener A Lot Can Happen, to the monstrous Evoke Me, and the tender finally of Fantasy, these are just more examples that if you want some of the best modern shoegaze, you look to Parannoul.
Once again, a great death metal album with another genre attached to it to make it stand out, and I am all for it. These songs flow really well into each other and they utilize the space it has expertly. Speaking of space, the world dissonant is really a great way of describing the way this album sounds. It isn't 100% all of the time. Take the double kick for example. It is used every now and then so the times it is used it is a lot more impactful. In terms of being a death metal album, I ... read more
I expected to enjoy this album, hell I expected to really enjoy this album. But holy shit I didn't expect the masterpiece that this turned out to be. 16 years in the making and it fucking shows. Every second is so meticulously crafted and every hook, bassline, melody, and gaps of silence make me want to give Robert Smith a big ol' kiss. Even if you have never heard of The Cure before, you need to check this out.
Just a lot of fun. You can tell they had a great time making this. I am also writing this after seeing all three of them + quinn play in Pittsburgh and that fun translated perfectly to the show. I was so close to the stage that when both FearDorian and Polo Perks stage dived I thought my shoulder was going to dislocate. Still a 10/10 show and a really fun jerk record. RAINBOW is definitely my favorite track.
I hope all of DJ Khaled's success is taken from him and given to DJ Drama. Ever since Red Death off of 10, he has been a welcome addition to the Griselda line-up (like how he is an honorary member of Dreamville). But yeah this is just classic Westside Gunn. Everything you love about him is here. I also love how the album is split with the first half being just Gunn, and the second being Griselda cuts. There isn't anything more I can say, its just another great year knowing Westside ... read more
What a mess. I know so many people who were so deeply affected by Eternal Atake that it really sucks to have this be the long-awaited follow-up. The bottom line is that this sounds cheap. It sounds like he just did a freestyle for all of these songs, and he's just not good enough to make music like that. The only song that sounded kind of thought out was PerkySex, an entire song around the fact that Percocet and Perkysex sound similar. I do feel bad for Uzi fans, they got done dirty.
I'm sure there is a good reason for them, and I can admit I don't fully understand their significance, but the phone calls ruined this project. There is some great Westside Gunn material here, but then half the run time of this entire ep is phone calls. This may be a teaser, but I am treating it as the next installment of Hitler Wears Hermes. If it isn't supposed to be then why is it called 11? I still enjoyed this episode as I tend to enjoy anything Westside Gunn puts out.
Before anyone calls this a charli xcx ripoff, this came out the same day as brat so ha. But anyways this was the first thing I have ever heard from 2hollis and I am pretty impressed. These songs go hard, have a lot of emotion, and are conveyed in a really interesting way. I guess this is also my first electroclash record and to me that just combined hyperpop with high-tempo dance music which once again, is really interesting. My one big complaint is that you once said my name for the first time ... read more
