For being arguably the most high profile drill artist working, Ice Spice fails to capitalize on that success and has provided us with a half-baked mess that has very little personality to speak on. The features don't provide anything that gives this project life and the production is cliche and derivative. For a debut with this many eyes on it, Y2K! fails to justify to us why Ice Spice is as big as she is.
Going into this, I didn't expect such an introspective and personal record, but for the most part it succeeds. The hyperpop bangers still exist and now they are paired with moments of reflection that never feel out of place. I think the slowest moments is when it dives completely into that somber mindset but I still thoroughly enjoyed my time with this. I respect a clear vision and Porter shows he has one.
I mean it's 3 songs and my favorite song on this ep is Seeing Red which is just a Minor Threat cover (a really good one might I add) but it's just ok. I would definetly recomend anyone interested in HKFY to check out Third World Fighting Music, it's really good and long which is rare for powerviolence.
It's ok. I'm a massive Gizz fan and I tend to perfer their rock orientied records over their synth heavy ones. I think this is a slightly worse Butterfly 3000 but it is still enjoyable.
Note: I didn't listen to any of the extended mix versions of the songs, so if that would have made my experience better let me know.
Hell yeah brother. This is King Gizzard back on their jammy, bluesy and fuzzy rock that they haven't done since, probably Omnium Gatherum at points. This is just fun and the sheer fact that this is their 26th record and they are still putting out quality like this is absolutely astounding.
Ridiculously catchy, heavy and entertaining hardcore. I hear people calling the flute on the breakdown of THE FIRST TEST a gimick but that couldn't be further from the truth. It is such a small compelling addition that gives the song and the album so much character. A debut could not be stronger and I am excited to see what these guys will do in the future.
There are two things incredibly tragic about this album. One is that this is arguably the most underrated album of all time, constantly being overshadowed by Either/Or, and the second is that we would of gotten more music like this had he not of died in 2003, From a Basement on a Hill is proof of that. This has some of my favorite rock compositions of any artist ever, some of my favorite poems ever written, as well as some absolute bangers and songs that make me tear up. I would like to see a ... read more
It's repetative, he says some insane shit, and he doesn't know how to end a song, but I would be lying if I said I didn't have fun listening to this. I laughed out loud several times throughout. It is an incredibly unserious album but it revels in that unseriousness. It is a really fun time I would recomend.
An incredibly vulnerable, stripped back and personal record deserves all the attention it can get. Sadness As A Gift following Real House is one of my favorite musical moments of the year and both songs are phenominal on there own. I also really liked the cover of Vampire Empire and thought it fit perfectaly here. There is so much here to appreciate and praise about this.
The score I am giving this album means two things. One, that it is less offensive and shocking then the original, so therefore a higher score, and two, that it was released in an unfinished state and not worthy of being held to any regard, ironic or otherwise. Once again this record is bound to bring down music discussion of any kind to the level of the most bigotted Kanye fan and I don't want to be apart of any of it. I don't get how Kanye fan's can recieve a product this ... read more
JPEGMAFIA proves again that he can doesn't need anyone but himself to make banger after banger (Vince, Denzel and Buzzy Lee features don't hurt though). The production is hard hitting, fun, angry, sentimental, and just good all over. The use of guitar and guitar samples elevates this from Peggy's usual strong drum heavy production to sounding like he has the greatest rock band you never heard of backing him. Great as always.
Heartpacing wasn't' even bad why does he have to go and do this shit. It's worth a laugh but nothing else. This is what blink-182 sounds like to me btw (joke) (kind of)
Holy shit this is a journey of an album. The perfect fusion of jazz, soul, rap, and funk feels effortless as this double album feels like it is over in a second. Even if you want to ignore the entire album and just focus on the achievement that is Prologue, this is still one of the best albums of the year. The collaborators as well as Kamasi's composition makes this album feel like it is the work of community and culture. And oh my god the produciton is fucking insane. Every instrument ... read more
Denzel Curry has always been one of my favorite rappers every since I got into the genre about 6 years ago and Melt My Eyez was one of my favorite albums of 2022. This is a clear change in direction from the jazz and soul produciton on that record and for what it's worth it is good. I have never been the biggest fan of album's where every song has a feature (Westside Gunn being an exception) and the problems that come with that format are here, but it is a fun time overall so I ... read more
I heard Punk's Dead and was immedietly hooked by this duo's sound. The rest of the album does not dissapoint and combines the grit of hardcore punk with strong, with strong but not overbearing production. These songs are angry, brief, and compelling. I also really enjoy the cleaner more stripped back closer Everything and Nothing, it shows a range that a lot of punk music lacks. One of the strongest punk albums of the year so far.
THE NICKELBACK GAUNTLET: DAY 10
It's finally over and I feel nothing. This is just a bad rock album and there isn't even a fun way to spin this. It's compitently made because of course it is but that can't prevent it from being boring. They just can't help themselves and they constantly ruin good ideas with horrible overproduction and corny rock music tropes. The #1 thing I learned throughout this entire journey is that Nickelback is best when they are Nickelback, they ... read more
THE NICKELBACK GAUNTLET: DAY 9
God I just don't care. This is the least Nickelback album yet (maybe second to Curb) and it's just not fun. It's not offensive like Dark Horse and All The Right Reasons or hilariously bad like No Fixed Address, but I care the least about this. All the vague political messaging that existed in certain songs on other albums now has a full album to that theme. It's at its worse on songs like Feed The Machine, Silent Majority and The Betrayal (Act ... read more
THE NICKELBACK GAUNTLET: DAY 8
Holy shit this is by far the worst sounding Nickelback album I have come across yet. Don't think the writing is at all passible either but the sheer awfulness of the way this album was made is dominating. It starts right away with the weird and bad vocal effect they put on Chad's voice in the first god damn song (Million Miles an Hour) and it just gets worse from there. Don't get me started on the lukewarm "political anthem" that is Edge ... read more
THE NICKELBACK GAUNTLET: DAY 7
I didn't expect a late stage Nickelback album to be any sense of decent but here we are. I think this album is the perfect blend of the craziness of Dark Horse with the formula of The Long Road. Once again I have qualify any praise I give this album as a Nickelback album so all the flaws of one still exists, they are just turned down a little. There is only one song that I cringe at this time (Everything I Wanna Do) and the rest of the songs are fine, which ... read more
THE NICKELBACK GAUNTLET: DAY 6
This album is an absolute mess, but a kind of fun one. I feel like they made two seperate albums with this. One about drugs, sex, partying, sex, and more sex. And another about more serious issues like drug addiciton and mortality. Then once they had those two albums made they completely randomized it into one album and picked the tracklist by throwing darts at a wall. It wasn't boring and Burn It to the Ground is fun so I do think it is a step up from All ... read more
