One of those albums where being "artistic" and having a compelling concept are more important than actually making good music.
Crazy beat for Billy.
Edit: After learning about the russian children story that this track is based on its way better.
Love that Billy is Peter and Mickey is supposed to be the wolf from the story.
Very fun concept.
After an incredible start with The Mountain it just never clicked for me.
Every song just was nothing interesting, they didn't blend together or anything like that they just.... Suck.
I liked the indian inspirations and artists on it but they couldn't really help this project.
Liked: The Mountain, Damascus.
Don't know what it is about classical music that invokes feeling on things like the season or in this case The Planets, the concept of giving these things a theme / feeling just works really well for me.
Great music, especially Mars.
I am very glad that she has this outlet in which she can express her anger, disappointment and channel it into art.
Must feel fantastic.
Anyhow, this album sonically does not hit at all for me, I barely like the songs on this, although they are not bad (except cough Young cough) I just do not get excited about them.
Unfortunately the premise/subject of the album can't carry it for me, she sounds great, but the songs don't.
Except for Only, Lion and Lotus, they are insane.
Don't think I have listened to a better 4 song run than the first 4 songs of this album.
Each one just hits extremely hard and are very distinct in their message / feel.
This whole album just breathes greatness and doesn't age badly even after 27 years.
This could have come out today and would still feel fresh.
The only points I am deducting are for (Exchange), that number adds nothing to the album and is really boring.
Quadeca is kinda perplexing to me.
On the one hand, hearing pieces like the first half of "WAGING WAR" blow me away, and then the next half I hear some bad auto-tune singing which completely ruin the first half for me.
Also, the weird echo rapping from the first part comes back but way worse, all the while I love the ethereal music on the background.
RUIN MY LIFE also just sucks, but the ending is nice, creative at least.
GODSTAINED starts so nice, I like his voice, the guitar works ... read more
Damm "Salt Bae it, sprinkle it and sauté it" is a horrible line.
Also, Pharrell really needs to just make the beats, made some songs kinda unlistenable when he was singing on them.
Pretty good album overall, but I won't revisit it a lot, first 5 tracks are goated though.
Extremely enjoyable covers, they sound like they are having a lot of fun on this.
One of those bands that just put a smile on your face when you're listening to them.
A thing I really enjoy about math rock is the satisfaction of listening to it, and apart from 4 songs, this album doesn't really make me feel satisfied.
Most of the middle is just kinda redundant and feels completely disjointed from the other songs, but not in an interesting way.
Do really enjoy the rest, especially the small genre inclusions/infusions that happen, they surprise me and make the songs really enjoyable.
Can be better.
Finally took the time to listen to the whole album after listening to Dance of the Manatee for the last 5 years.
Should have done that way sooner, shit slaps, great metal with a very raw feel to it.
Seafarer's Knot especially goes very hard.
Although I can enjoy about half of this, I think this album has aged pretty poorly, the rapping on this was already outdated in 1991.
Maybe I am expecting too much from such an old album, but after Safe from Harm it isn't until Unfinished Sympathy that I truly start enjoying the songs again.
It not like it's bad, I just expect more nowadays, which is an unfair comparison.
