First review on this site, and it's one of my favorite electronic albums out there? On my birthday, even? This will get lengthy, and rather personal. This is only an ounce of a myriad of thoughts, ones that have circulated excitedly in my head over the better part of the last 4 years.
I was not too much of an electronic lover for most of my life, only giving myself small tastes of it through the selection featured in Just Shapes & Beats. I was introduced to Camellia through the ... read more
Of the Camellia albums I was discovering across his discography at the start of 2022, Blackmagik Blazing demanded my attention above most. Despite knowing nothing about it, it lent a certain air of intrigue and mystery. I could tell it was a popular choice amongst folks who enjoy this kind of music. It was something worth anticipating more than his other releases, and that anticipation has paid in spades since. This was the point I realized that Camellia's "lightning-in-a-bottle" ... read more
I'll try to keep this one shorter since many of my thoughts line up with Instesolence's review. HiTNEX ViRTUAL SHiFTERZ is the other Kobaryo album that I've found myself pretty conflicted with regarding his recent releases. The idea it seems to be going for is admittedly pretty cool: Kobaryo wants to showcase an album where he can effortlessly weave between a handful of his aliases and still present a unified whole. Its often scatterbrained and erratic structure presented opportunities to glance into Kobaryo's musical headspace and get a richer understanding of his style's appeal. While I don't think it was perfectly executed or one of the best albums I've heard in the ... read more
As a deep underground collaborative effort, I really admire the sense of camaraderie that EPOCH OF EQUION oozes, even putting aside my gut-instinct thoughts on it. It's a good Camellia-inspired album that allowed all the artists involved to build experience and share their love of music together. I would never want to take that away from them.
The bulk of my personal shortcomings with EOE comes down to the same problems that any artist heavily inspired by Camellia's works have for ... read more
Kyutatsuki is a rather peculiar artist for me. I blind bought Fractured Horizon and found it to be an all-around great album. Everything there was well-rounded and very easy to enjoy throughout, so I grew curious about their previous release to see how it would compare. Unfortunately, Dimension Wars has at least two big problems that makes it difficult for me to recommend to folks exploring the deeper reaches of the Japanese EDM scene.
To start with one positive, the mixing and mastering on ... read more
