Rating #306: Distracted - Thundercat
Been anticipating this albums release, never got into Thundercat's music but always had it in the back of my mind, and this album is pretty much what I expected. Thundercat makes good music that can really carry a vibe but can get quite repetitive, especially if a song is too long ("No More Lies"). This album is good but the 2nd half is definitely worse than the first half, maybe because the album's front loaded with features, maybe ... read more
Rating #304: Radical - Odd Future
The beats range from bad to good and the lyrics range from bad to mildly funny. I can't stand most of the lyrics on here their just so unfunny and not charming at all, Tyler especially gets on my nerves (which I know was what he was going for). This is not worth your time.
Rating #303: The OF Tape Vol. 2 - OFWGKTA
Some decent ideas and potential is shown here from every member, but overall they hadn't grown enough yet to make this album actually all that great. I'd say the beats are the highlights on this album, there's not really a bad one throughout the whole thing. This album kinda feels more like a bunch of friends messing around in the studio, which gives the whole thing a really nostalgic and warm vibe (despite how dark some of the lyrics ... read more
85 -> 90
This album is so much fun it's so clunky and gritty in a way but danceable at the same time and the strings are the perfect addition to balance everything. I love love both Phantoms and obviously Genesis and Stress, perfect encapsulations of what makes this album great. However, while "TTHHEE PPAARRTTYY" and "Valentine" are cute for what they are and aren't bad they're definitely this album's biggest and only real sins. Definitely give this a ... read more
Rating #302: Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star - Black Star
I'm gonna be honest I wasn't completely locked in while listening to this but off the beats and trusting that Talib and Yasiin were in point lyrically (which I'm sure they were), this could probably get to a very high 90 to a 100 for me but we'll have to see about that on another relisten.
65 -> 69
I decided to give this a relisten before I listen to Black Star's debut because a lot of the criticism towards this album seems like it comes from comparisons between this and their debut, so I wanted to have a clean slate and not get my expectations super high, and I mean, the album's not bad at all. There's definitely moments where Yasiin and Talib can show their age or songs can get repetitive or just not really keep my attention, but the production is never bad ... read more
Rating #300: Black On Both Sides - Mos Def
This was the first ever album I added to my "listen list," and after over 100 more albums, I've finally come to listen to it. This is also one of the few reviews I've done (I'm planning to do more now). I don't know if I can say anything about this album that hasn't already been said, it's easily one of the best albums of all time and deserves the title of "classic." I love how it's got that ... read more
Genuinely I do not know how anyone can hate this album.
I understand Geordie's vocals aren't for everyone (even for me they can be difficult at times) but you've gotta admit there's some great performances on here (I LOVE that high note on Terra) and the instruments here. THE INSTRUMENTS. Amazing, mine boggling guitar and drum work here that bring me awe on every song, especially when they're layered so many times to create massive walls of sound. The Latin influences ... read more
One year after this album's release, it's still just as amazing— better even— as the day I first listened to it back in March of 2025. This album has so many layers, so much depth, so many sounds and influences, but doesn't ever feel overblown. Every track on this album fits perfectly where it's placed and contributes something to the story and themes while still standing on its own without the context of the rest of the album. Genuinely it's mind boggling ... read more
