Pinned Review

Ryan Beatty - Calico

I'm sorry but this album is a masterpiece. Fully obsessed.

I do tend to veer towards this type of music and by that I mean sad gay indie folk. But I think this has a summer vibe to me. I know this sounds a bit odd but it gives me the same sort of vibe as Solar Power, I can't put my finger on why, this is more melancholy sounding but it gives me that, you know.

This is an album to put on and just chill out to. I think the melodies are beautiful and his voice is like butter. The whole thing is ... read more

I mean, yeah I'll echo what almost everyone is saying and say that I really don't understand why this is a deluxe when SOS came out like two years ago and there's more than enough content here for an album but whatever, she probably has her reasons and they are probably to do with bullshit charts or streaming - who knows.

Anyway, that aside - I'm just going to be rating the new songs here and honestly, I'm kinda blown away. It's an instant love for me which ... read more

NB: This is less of a review and more of a dear diary...

Once again, I will ask myself the question whether I am listening to this album through the sonic equivalent of rose-tinted glasses. It's hard to rate things that have such heavy nostalgia. This album was the soundtrack to my high school years. I relistened to it probably for the first time in 15 years and was instantly transported to the summer holidays of the mid-2000s. Weirdly this album reminds me of the French Revolution ... read more

On intial listen, this is a solidly good album if not necessarily blowing me away. This album makes it pretty clear that he's going to struggle to get away from those Sufjan Steven comparisons...and frankly, for good reason. This is very much in that style.

But the album itself is very calming and full of hushed, soft tones that make it a really nice listening experience. There are some lulls on the album but there's nothing unpleasant here. I think that there are three songs that instantly ... read more

Perhaps apart from Lost in Space by Aimee Mann, there is no other album out there that is more nostaligic than this one. When I listen to this album, I am instantly transported back to my teenage bedroom. I think with albums like these it's hard to separate that very deep connection you have with the album to assess it without the nostalgia-goggles...but I think this album is a masterpiece.

The difference between this album and other albums of my teenage years is that I still listen to this ... read more
