TWENTY ONE PILOTS | CHAPTER FOUR

Despite breaking and selling records, this album is sort of another mixed bag, albeit a better one than Regional. The performances and production are improved but the boys take some steps back in focusing on a trendy 2015 pop flavoring over their normal sound, and sometimes implementing some less than favorable trends from this period into songs. It’s also not all that replayable due to a sort of rocky tracklist that’s rather frontloaded and contains some mediocre to bad songs sprinkled in. And while there isn’t that many duds, even taking them out wouldn’t make this record live to its fullest potential due to the pop sound getting a little tired eventually for me.

Overall though, this has a lot of great catchy pop hits on here that do make it a solid record (despite being a bit disappointing). I especially appreciate how this visibly laid the groundwork for their next record Trench in some places. Speaking of Trench, stay tuned as I tackle that behemoth in the next Twenty One Pilots review.

Favorite Tracks: Heavydirtysoul, Stressed Out, Ride, Tear In My Heart, Lane Boy, The Judge, Doubt, Polarize, Hometown, Goner

Okay Tracks: Message Man, We Don’t Believe What’s On TV

Least Favorite Tracks: Fairly Local, Not Today

(I apologize for the shorter review, this got deleted on accident. Next review will be longer I promise!)

(71 - 62

Could’ve been a good album, but the overproduction and annoying paradox of both wanting to make an album that’s a scathing critique of the radio while also being a way more accessible and touched up album than the previous three just really turns me away from it. Some pretty good and at times pretty great songs but often a mixed bag.)

you know what? I feel like this review more or less is how I feel about this album. Obviously, I am EXTREMELY biased towards this album and rate it highly, but objectively it's production choices are a bit iffy sometimes and some of the lyrics ("I wasn't raised in the hood") aren't the best. Great review as always!
