while technically the origin album / [0] was never released nor leaked in it's entirety, we have most of it. similar to la maison, i won't be ranking it since we haven't heard the full project, but it's fine. 'FREESM' sounds cute, and that's kinda the only note i have for this full release besides that we were robbed of a music video. this is what happens when you force girls to push something out at one final attempt to save your company. wish they were able ... read more
when i originally said on my review of 'hula hoop' that there was no other loona japanese release... i lied. luminous is a single that exists. it's the only release we got with chuu being missing, and it's just painfully meh. it rivals 'not friends' for its averageness. like whatever.. it's here.
loona's last release as a complete group would be their summer album, 'flip that,' and it's a pretty good way to go out. 'flip that' is a good song, but i'm torn on how much i actually like it. for the sake of the review, i'll leave it at "good, but not the best." need u is a really pretty ballad, especially knowing what would soon come for the group. 'POSE' was originally meant for a boy group and that could not be more obvious. ... read more
after WHATEVER '&' and 'not friends' were, it was time for the loona girls to remind us what made them so special. we got their japanese debut, 'HULA HOOP' and whew... it's incredible. hula hoop is easily one of the groups best title tracks (arguably the best). it's nothing but energy and truly the epitome of a 'j-pop' song. the city pop version is also pretty good. star seed is a great song, and pretty underrated in loona's catalog, ... read more
i don't even know if you can consider 'not friends' a title track, but if you can, it would be the worst one by far. the song features the members heejin, kim lip, jinsoul, and yves, and it's kind of a hot mess. the only good part is the chorus, and the rest is mediocre at best.
loona's previous album, '12:00,' had been a great return to form for the group. it brought back the fun and weirdness that was present in their earlier releases. however, '&' could not live up to that same hype sadly. on a more positive note, we finally have haseul back! while for sure being the worst loona release, '&' has its stand outs. 'PTT' a really great title track, and feels so fresh and new for the loona girls. all members on this ... read more
2020 saw 2 different comebacks from the group, the first being hash, and the second being this release, or '12:00' after a year long hiatus, over which the group lost their creative director & member haseul went on hiatus, the groups music took a hit, which was very clear on their '[#]' mini album. despite that, the group was able to find it's footing again with this release. it's no [X X] or max & match (but honestly what is) BUT it's still a really ... read more
# was the first loona comeback in a year, and over the course of the group's hiatus there were some major changes. most notably, loona's creative director who had worked with the group all the way from heejin's single up to [X X] had been fired due to creative differences. along with this, member haseul had taken a hiatus to prioritize her mental health. unfortunately, this all shows in the EP. while loona's 2016 - 2019 run had been pretty stellar, this is the first release ... read more
for my full loona deep dive, i wanted to touch on la maison / loonatheballad but i wasn't really sure how. there's not much to rank, so i'll just give my thoughts on what we could have had. the snippet of hyper ballad is really good, and is full of what made X X so great. blooming moon / crystal ballad (not so sure about the official title) is a truly beautiful snippet, and would be what i believe to be the best loona ballad. despite hearing maybe a total of 2 minutes of this ... read more
after the INCREDIBLE debut ++, it was time for loona to repackage and release their first full album as a group, "[X X]." my main critique with their debut was how much more i wanted, and [X X] really provides that. the title track, 'butterfly,' is still the best song to come out of any loona related project; whether that be post-BBC albums, solo singles, or unit albums. if you were to describe loona using one song, let it be butterfly. it feels hollow and less pop-focused ... read more
for my loona ranking, i disregarded all the mini albums and only ranked the repackages. however, it feels necessary that i split up ++ & X X into two seperate reviews. after a long two years, loona had finally debuted as a full group with [+ +], and wow. like actually just wow. i think similar to my yyxy review, my main critique is that i need more, which we would later get in the repackage. from the second you click play, [+ +] is nothing but super fun and exciting. for the first time in ... read more
after 12 girls and 2 sub-units, it was time for the pre-debut project to come to an end. the last four girls revealed, yves, chuu, go won, and hyeju, came together to form the yyxy unit. the previous sub-units had gotten both an ep and a repackaged album, with 1/3 getting love & evil and ODD EYE CIRCLE getting max & match. however, due to corporate greed and blockberry creative believing the pre-debut project had gone on for too long, yyxy's femme&fatale was scrapped, robbing ... read more
after the eleventh member go won's introduction & solo, it was soon time to introduce the final member of the lineup. hyeju, who debuted into loona as 'olivia hye,' was revealed as the 12th and final member of the girl group, and with that came her solo 'egoist' and 'rosy.' they knew they couldn't have the last solo be dull, which lead to the greatness of 'egoist.' the track is dark, with a low sounding synth pounding throughout the chorus ... read more
after chuu's incredible heart attack, it was time for the eleventh member of the group to be revealed. loona had a fully stacked lineup and a diverse catalog of solo singles up to this point. they were however, missing a rap solo (slightly joking). this is when the light shined upon the land and the clouds parted as the angelic figure go won descended with her singles 'one & only' and 'see saw' featuring previously revealed chuu & kim lip. go won's single ... read more
chuu was the 10th member revealed to be apart of the group, and little did we know how much she would change the group. when i relistened to rank this properly, i forgot how unbelievably good this single is. 'heart attack' is such a fun & cute pop song, and it really encapsulated chuu's personality and place in the group. the definition of earworm. the track also has some of the weirdest production choices from the group up to this point. the loud DAMN! that starts the song ... read more
after the max & match era and ODD EYE CIRCLE unit came to a close, it was time for the loona project to move onto it's third and final sub-unit. to kick the home stretch off, we got 8th member 'yves' with her singles 'new' & 'D-1.' while ODD EYE CIRCLE'S members solo's were very pop leaning and in your face, yves' single really takes it back. 'new' is a really great r&b song that utlizies synths beautifully. yves' ... read more
after the great success of their previous singles, loona members kim lip, jinsoul, & choerry formed together to create the iconic ODD EYE CIRCLE sub-unit. similar to the LOONA 1/3 unit, an EP containing 5 songs off the album was released titled 'mix & match,' with the global smash hit 'girl front' being it's title track. it was later reissued with 3 new songs, and became the album "max & match." however, unlike the 1/3 unit, the ODD EYE CIRCLE ... read more
choerry was the 8th member revealed, and would soon become the final member that would be apart of the ODD EYE CIRCLE unit. this single is... shocking to say the least. when listening through these for the first time, i never expected for any of the singles to randomly have an edm drop.. also for it to be really good. the song being called "love cherry motion" while your name is choerry is also iconic.. so. then the b-side puzzle comes in, and i was really shocked again. it's ... read more
after the great 'eclipse,' the next loona solo had to be incredible to keep up the pace. and thank GOD we got the 7th member, jinsoul, with 'singing in the rain' & 'love letter.' jinsoul's single is my personal favorite out of the 11 other loona girls. 'singing in the rain' does a great job at letting jinsoul show off her incredible vocals while also letting loona's unique and incredible instrumentals play out. up until this point, the ... read more
the LOONA project up until this point had been only been slightly succesful. LOONA 1/3's album was great along with the previous member's solos. however, it was time for the LOONA project to move on from the elegant vocals and glimmering instrumentals. this lead to the 6th member, 'kim lip,' being revealed. kim lip's single 'eclipse' is incredibly different from all the previous loona work, almost so that it sounds like an entirely different group. while ... read more
