John Lennon & Yoko Ono - Unfinished Music No. 1: Two Virgins [Reissue]
NR

Remember Love may be my new favorite song of all time

Kendrick Lamar - Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers
NR

Over the past 2 years this has absolutely been the Kendrick project I've returned to the most. Something about it just makes it grow slightly and slightly more on me month over month, year over year. Maybe my feelings towards this album are just reflecting the journey of the album itself, of taking steps, of growth. It's such a weird situation where there's a few songs that are just decent and not as many high points as other albums of Kendrick's, and yet this is my ... read more

Andrew Prahlow - Outer Wilds (Original Soundtrack)
NR

The very first thing I noticed while playing the game was the music. These first few years have been nice, so here's to the next 14.3 billion 🍻

파란노을 [Parannoul] - 고통없이 [Painless]
NR

Pure triumph. Parannoul means “blue sunset” in Korean, which may have applied to TSTNPOTD, with its simmering self-loathing hidden under a blanketing veil of dissociative sound, or even to AtM, with its cold but shimmering beauty. But between this and gold river? I think we’re about to experience a truly golden sunset, one that we will remember forever.

Charli xcx - Brat and it's the same but there's three more songs so it's not
NR

All 3 extra tracks go harder than half of the songs on the base album, and yet I can totally see why they're only on the it's the same but there's three more songs so it's not version. Perfect deluxe treatment for a perfect album.

Charli xcx - The girl, so confusing version with lorde

Where were you on June 21st, 2024?

Charli xcx - BRAT
NR

This is conversion therapy for straight men (i'm losing my goddamn mind)

As someone who is LGBTQ+ but, due to my presentation, social class, upbringing, and the nature of my identity, I have almost never engaged with the culture nor felt comfortable enough to engage with it fully. On top of that, I've pretty much always lived with the luxury of existing as the cultural default. I present very much as a cis, straight male, and I'm fortunate enough to not need to let others know ... read more

Clever Girl - No Drum and Bass in the Jazz Room
NR

Absolutely gorgeous math rock compositions that feature woodwind and brass as primary instruments alongside the classic 2 lead guitars, bass, and drums. Somehow with so many melody lines going at once, not to mention the intricate drum lines, it all still feels very well-balanced (even including the occasional synth effects o_0). Not much else to say; it's just really, really pretty.

If I had some sort of strong emotional history with this EP, I could easily see it being perfect in my ... read more

新しい学校のリーダーズ [ATARASHII GAKKO!] - AG! Calling
NR

If this were any other group, this wouldn't be an enjoyable listen. The charisma of ATARASHII GAKKO! carries this project HARD. It's decent fun throughout, but lots of these songs feel under baked. Like, for example, why does Omakase feel like it has the weakest chorus drop of all time?

There's only a few songs that I feel compelled to come back to, such as Hero Show and Tokyo Calling, but to have only 2-ish great songs and only 2-3ish good ones beyond that doesn't add up to a solid project. ... read more

ひとひら [Hitohira] - つくる [Tsukuru]
NR

The fuck?! I only listened to this based on the album cover, it wasn’t supposed to be this good!

Hitohira have seemingly discovered exactly the things that can make J-rock, midwest emo, and shoegaze so addicting and created some of the most infectious and lively songs that any of those genres have to offer. These 3 elements are interconnected very well on つくる, but unexpectedly no singular sound arises from the mix. Rather, each element feels distinct, going supernova separately for ... read more

Ondatrópica - Ondatrópica
NR

Far better than I remembered. There's a bit of a rough patch through the middle where things sound a bit samey, but other than that this just bleeds fun and creativity. You can really feel how many great latin voices are coming together on this hearty album. And in a genre like cumbia which can often feel stuck in the past or hung up on one sound, this feels refreshingly modern (especially on the production side of things!)

Lamp - 恋人へ [For Lovers]
NR

Rainy days with grey skies, the shift of the seasons from winter to spring, the calm rhythm of the ocean, florescent lights reflecting off the wet ground, looking wistfully out a train window, breath fogging the glass, thinking of the other person, giving up confessions and sorrowful goodbyes, protecting each other from the cold, a story told through the interplay between male and female voices, accompanied by comforting yet bittersweet shibyua-kei?

They weren't lying, this album really is ... read more

新しい学校のリーダーズ [ATARASHII GAKKO!] - 一時帰国 [Ichijikikoku]
NR

This shit is heat

Atarashii Gakko is an idol group made up of four who started as friends (as opposed to a group assembled by an agency) and who prioritize doing things that they think are fun and interesting over sticking to the same bland idol formula. In fact, it's not just a priority; their entire ethos is "to push the boundaries a little with our freedom and individuality, which led to self-proclaiming that we are the youth representatives of Japan," and these are things that ... read more

Adrianne Lenker - Bright Future
NR

It's never all sunshine and rainbows, and it's never all death and destruction. With love comes pain, and with sadness comes hope. I wish I had even a moment to see emotions and experiences through Adrianne's eyes, and I feel like I would listen to her musings on life and love forever.

The images that she weaves together are so pretty and mesmerizing (ex: Please deliver their angel eyes, On the wings of moths and dragonflies, Through the morning and evening their sun set my sunrise, Let them ... read more

CHANCE デラソウル - All Together Now
NR

The main sentiment I was getting from the discussion of this album was something like "this reminds me of The Avalanches, but it's just *not* The Avalanches." And after listening to this album over the past few days, that just tells me that I should REALLY stop procrastinating and listen to Since I Left You already, because this was a really good front-to-back listening experience. The sampling was noticeably well-executed and the song progressions were very engaging/creative. The mix ... read more

Brian The Sun - シュレディンガーの猫

This EP is a fucking blast, dude. Incredibly catchy, vaccuum-seal tight, urgently brisk, full of vitality. Plus, cute kitty. Need I say more?

the pillows - フリクリ (FLCL): OST 1 ~ Addict
NR

If someone hasn't heard of the pillows before, I really wouldn't be able to articulate to them what exactly the difference is between their music and that of a generic alt-rock band, but there's just SOMETHING about it and especially the FLCL soundtrack that is bigger than its genre. After only watching the show once-through, I already recognized 90% of the songs on here (most of which don't have a hook or lyrics!), which really speaks to how iconic and memorable these arrangements are. the ... read more

On Daughters - You Won't Get What You Want
"I removed my section heavily denouncing Marshal's actions and expressing disappointment at the band's reaction to the situation, it felt a little virtue-signaly to me. It's bad, really bad, and we all know it. If I do not have anything insightful to add, then there's no reason to retread through the waters of pain."
On Charli xcx - BRAT
"@HummingStratus (2/2) Because of the character limit, I can't also bring up the dozens of other things I considered after giving your points some thought over the past few days, but just as I cannot be fully articulate due to online constraints I assume that there's some way I could be misinterpreting or misunderstanding you due to only having a single comment to go off of, so I didn't want to write paragraphs of response to something that isn't being best represented. All I feel comfortable in saying is that I appreciated your comment a lot, there are some small things that I'd disagree on or that are just being left out, but I think we would agree on a lot if we were not limited to like 300 characters or whatever this is lol."
On Charli xcx - BRAT
"@HummingStratus (1/2) Ah, fair enough. After giving your comment some thought, I think I do agree that it isn't good to propagate an association or stereotype, and my own subconscious bias is revealed in how I took the themes of this album outside of just the female experience (which is what the album is most prominently about) and associated it with queerness as well. But, it's not the "degeneracy" or "trashiness" that I associated with queerness (it's why I separated it into different paragraphs lol), but it was reading and hearing the experiences of queer strangers and friends alike and how Charli's music and the PC music scene outside of it connects to them in some way."
On John Lennon & Yoko Ono - Unfinished Music No. 1: Two Virgins [Reissue]
"Or at least tied. The Rat is really tough to dethrone. It may seem a little dumb, but I listened to this song after watching the 102 minute long video on Yoko Ono (and various other victims of "women who ruined men" narratives) and it just feels different, idk."
On Jonah's review of Radiohead - In Rainbows
"One of the best reviews I've read."
On Jonah's review of Lorde - Pure Heroine
"The depth to which this album impacts you is clear in how much time/effort it would take to write a review this in-depth. Between this, Charli's collaboration, and my recent reevaluation of how I feel abt melodrama, all signs are pointing towards Lorde. I'll definitely be listening to this and to Solar Power soon"
On Beeyyaahh's review of Turnover - Peripheral Vision
"Gorgeous review. I'm glad the record has had such an impact on you, and I also find it to be pretty special. My friend actually just got it for me on vinyl as my secret santa, and revisiting it brought all of the warm and dreamy feelings I got on first listen a few years ago. Anyways that's all, happy holidays!"
On RosariaGH's review of Colin Stetson - When we were that what wept for the sea
"I completely agree, I am blown away at both the beauty of the quiet parts and the intensity of the intricate parts. Stetson's music is so far the only instrumental music to have moved me to tears."
On PotatoPeeler68's review of Taylor Swift - 1989 (Taylor's Version)
"I had the same exact reaction to Bad Blood, it's like a completely different song! Great takes here"
