It's frustrating when talented young bands don't recognize their limitations and stretch an album far beyond what the material can support. This is one of those cases: there are plenty of enjoyable moments here, but by the end, they've blurred together so much that few leave a lasting impression—or inspire a return visit.
Not as cohesive as Arular or Kala, Matangi still contains some of Arulpragasam’s most explosive bangers of her entire discography. She’s at her best when she goes full throttle — after all, she’s got the bombs to make you blow, doesn't she? The same can’t quite be said for the smoother R&B detours, though.
There aren’t many collab remix albums that successfully add the character of featured artists to songs (Brat and It’s Completely Different but Also Still Brat, I’m looking at you), but Girls Trip really does give new life to the pop supernova that was Midnight Sun.
