The Gerogerigegege - 燃えない灰 [Moenai Hai]
100

Moenai Hai is inexorably linked to loneliness and Juntaro Yamanouchi’s over a decade-long absence from public life. I consider myself lucky to have never experienced a loneliness as crippling or as long as the one portrayed in the album, but I can still relate to it on some level. The album is a mix of Ambient, Field Recording, and Noise Rock, and while it may not be my favorite album in terms of enjoyment, as an artistic statement and a palpable example of pain, it is.

This is some Heavy Jazz. I love the way the baritone saxophone is used throughout the album, the growl they are able to get out of it is unmatched. My childhood was a period of waiting for the moment when I could send everyone and everything connected with it to hell starts with a fairly simple sax riff, upon which the violin, drums, and keys build on. I will admit it starts to get a bit repeatitive (not unusual for a 18 minute song) but once the sax drops the song really begins. The violin ... read more

Geese - Getting Killed

Geese combines Cameron Winter's warbling vocals with a higher energy sound to produce a extremely unique sound. Winter's vocals may work best on slower songs such as Husbands or Au Pays du Cocaine, where the voice sounds pleading, but the band makes it work even on the faster songs. The album kicks off with Trinidad, which highlights a lot of the strengths of the album right at the start. It's chaotic at times, filled with pyschedelic riffs and strange lyrics, but it comes ... read more

Electric Guest - 10K

After the disappointment that was KIN, Electric Guest waited 6 years to release their next album. I was hoping that time would let them find what made their first 2 albums such good synth-pop, and that sort of happened. Unfortunately, that only happened on a few of the songs, and a lot of the rest end up fairly forgettable.

The first song on the album is one of the best. Till the Morning has a good synth line with a fun stabby sound, and Taccone pulls off the falsetto sound without sounding ... read more

I'm a sucker for Art Rock and saxophones. I can see the comparison to BC,NR and Racing Mount Pleasant, but this band has it's own spin on the sound. This album leans more into some math-rocky sounds. A lot of the songs start with a nice guitar riff before blossoming into the richer soundscapes that are more typical of this scene. There is also an influence of Latin/South American music in the album that is lacking on other albums in the genre - the most obvious example of that is the ... read more

Chat Pile - Cool World

Chat Pile's sophmore album keeps a lot of the same traits that made their debut so good. The crunchy heavy sound that sometimes almost ventures to noise, the in-your-face lyrics, and the overall intensity are all there. While it doesn't have as clear highlights as God's Country, it more than makes up for it in consistency across the album.

I enjoyed basically every minute of this album, my only complaint was that I managed to tune out camcorder by the end of the song. Other ... read more
