Rico Nasty is one of a kind. One of the lines that made me fall in love with her a few years ago came from the track Sell Out where she says "I'm the best at being me, a lot of y'all can't relate". Rico has always done things her way and forged her own path where there wasn't one already, and there is no better example of this than Las Ruinas. On this album Rico peels off layer upon layer of herself, revealing every side to her as she goes. There is such a large variety of styles at ... read more
I'm almost embarrassed to admit that despite my love for artpop and weird pop in all its forms, I've never actually listened to Björk before. But I was very excited to get into this and see what people are talking about. And yeah, I get it. This is gorgeous, it's really pretty. This album has such a clear world, it's exactly the dark misty alien forest that's depicted in the album art. I love the heavy use of woodwind sounds to really illustrate the calm gentle natural feeling. And the ... read more
Freddie Gibbs is so damn good. Like there's great stuff all over this record between the beats and the samples and the features but Freddie is just on another level. His deep voice carries so much weight with it, whether he's trying to sound dark and menacing or just chilling having a laid-back time he does so with energy and personality. His flows are so effortless and he sounds just as comfortable spitting tight speedy bars over energetic trap beats as he does giving relaxed storyteller ... read more
Bladee is an artist that I've been trying to make myself like for years. And I think this is the closest yet. My biggest issue with his music has always been that in going for a chill dreamy sound, it often falls short and ends up just being sleepy instead. That's still present on this album, there's a few songs that definitely just came and went without me taking really any notice of them. But there's also a handful of songs that really got into. I AM SLOWLY BUT SURELY LOSING HOPE and ... read more
This is an album that I was very excited to get into for a few different reasons. Her previous project, the incredible Alias EP, sparked a lot of interest and made me keen to see what heat Shygirl would drop next. But the singles we've heard since then showed a shift in sound from Alias. Songs like Cleo and Firefly showed Shygirl going in a lighter poppier direction which, if I'm being completely honest, I didn't enjoy as much. So going into this I was curious to see which direction it would go ... read more
CRAVITY has for for a while been my exception to my "I don't like boy groups" rule, but this is probably the weakest release I've heard from them. The two singles, Boogie Woogie and PARTY ROCK are overly clean bright funkpop tracks that are basically doing what BTS' recent songs like Butter and Permission To Dance did, aka be completely soulless and vapid. Fortunately that's not all this EP has to offer. New Addiction and AUTOMATIC are fun songs, with more interesting production and a ... read more
