God I love when I find actual good country. Rare these days it feels. But this album is awesome. First exposure to this guy and I really like his sound
In my short review of Secret Name, I mentioned Low’s unique ability to make minimal songs sound large. This album is that x100. Never have I ever had an album of songs as slow as these keep me completely locked in. Take the song Laugh for example. ON PAPER not a lot is happening. But the slow, hypnotic strumming builds tension so masterfully, with the volume increasing exponentially until it just swallows you whole. As I said the songs are slow. And the album asks you to have a lot of ... read more
Low’s sound truly can’t be matched. This is another solid record in their discography. The way they balance minimalistic meditative sounds while also being able to make those sounds FEEL so big is just incredible.
There’s some decent stuff on here, but the project is weighed down by a lack of focus and production. This group has potential and I think their upcoming release will be better.
Great riffs, violent lyrics, and production that serves as a throwback to the classic death metal sound while keeping it modern at the same time. What it lacks in variety and pushing of the envelope it makes up for with its pummeling presence.
This album is just such a comforting experience. It literally has everything. Catchiness, diverse instrumentals, strong lyrics, and it flows by so quick. Folk masters at work.
Some super catchy synth pop. Amazing song progressions. Very reminiscent of 80s synth stuff like Kate Bush and even some spots that sound a little Nine Inch Nails esque. Album of the year contender.
This album is gonna grow on people; that’s my prediction. It has some very introspective lyrics, an expansive sound pallet with moments of psychedelic pop and various sounds that really throw back to the 80s.
Proving he can make top tier singer songwriter material with any instrumental pallet, Elverum adopts an expansive arrangement of cold synths, floaty guitars, and a multitude of other textures without sacrificing his unique style.
Fun slice of retro psychedelic rock. An ode to the old school funky stuff with a modern twist.
To say this album holds a special place in my heart is an enormous understatement. Tool is the band that really got my foot in the door with alternative/experimental rock back in high school. I remember scouring YouTube for more songs before they went on streaming services. And their stuff is still so fucking good. This album being my personal favorite.
The production is the definition of perfection. Everything blends together so beautifully but nothing gets washed out in the mix. You can ... read more
A nice, laid back, feel good indie album with some catchy tunes. It’s not trying to do anything insanely unique or innovative, it’s simply trying to provide you with a pleasant time. The songs kind of blend together but they all make me do one of these “:D” so it doesn’t really matter. I also like the album cover quite a bit.
A cool slice of vibage, but I find it to be carried by its production a bit too heavily. It focuses more on aesthetic than it does actually keeping you engaged with the music. I see what it’s going for, it just missed the mark for me.
I love the vision they shot for here. While they didn’t do it perfectly in my opinion (I felt like the pacing of the record could’ve been improved upon as well as the mixing in some spots) they did a damn good job. This debut record has some BIG dreams and it comes very close to achieving them in full. Also the lead singer sounds a lot like Conor Oberst lol.
After sticking through Brads stream of this album I’m counting this as a listen. You can’t in good conscience ask me to sit through this on my own, that is cruel and unusual punishment. This album is truly a treasure, it contains at LEAST four of the worst songs I’ve ever heard in my life by all available metrics.
This thing is seriously awful. It’s not even funny bad, although there are some funny bad parts, it’s mainly just egregious to sit through. Each song is just as bland and lifeless as the previous one. On a sonic level alone it made me miserable. Constant up and down pitching of vocals, Derulo’s vocal runs that go on for a comically long time, and sound effects to “spice up” the instrumentals that genuinely sound like they’re coming from a computer next to you ... read more
I get a feeling that the band at some spots is trying to cover all the genre fusions they can muster. “Doing the most” as they say. And that leads to some really confusing song structures that just miss me. But it also makes for some genuinely very interesting mashups that I enjoyed quite a bit. This album is consistently trying to show off how much it can do; when it’s at its best when it’s showing a little restraint.
