This summer, Cash Cobain's music was an obsession for me. The originator of this new movement called Sexy Drill, Cash Cobain is part of this new generation of New York MCs exploring drill music from as yet untapped angles.
The first thing you need to know is that Sexy Drill is for girls. Cash Cobain makes no secret of the point. But this music has attracted the most curious ears regardless of gender.
So it was after several brilliant singles that Cash Cobain released his first album. ... read more
Listening to Better Me Than You, I wanted to check whether Big Sean had really matured in his approach. I also wanted to check whether the fans' disappointment was justified. So I immersed myself in Detroit 2, released in 2022.
And it's clear that this project is more entertaining overall. With a bevy of XXL guests (Post Malone, Young Thug, Travis Scott) and sharp production, Detroit 2 sounds like the ultimate blockbuster from the Detroit rapper.
However, the album suffers from its ... read more
If Kendrick Lamar hadn't decided to triumph over Drake in the most historic beef in rap history, 2024 might well have been the year of Future.
With Metro Boomin, Pluto focused attention on two very good projects released earlier in the year.
So I was surprised when I found out he was releasing a new project. It's a mixtape featuring Future in his trap bag. Unfortunately, this project suffers from the comparison with his last two opuses.
Future is incredibly lazy on this project. ... read more
Big Sean is back! After a 4-year absence, the Detroit rapper is finally back with his new album: Better Me Than You.
The single he sent out as a scout signed his return, but was swallowed up by the war between Kendrick and Drake.
I'm not a fan of the song's sound, but a lot of people liked it. So expectations were high for Better Me Than You.
But it's true that it was a commercial and critical flop.
The criticism levelled at Big Sean on this album is the clumsiness with which ... read more
Donald Glover is a versatile man, to say the least. Actor, director, writer, comedian, the guy's got quite a CV.
With “Bando Stone and The New World”, Donald Glover has chosen to resurrect Childish Gambino, the rapper and singer.
This guy is an enigma to me, as I find him globally overrated by the public, but particularly brilliant on certain videos and tracks (my favorites being 3005 and Feels Like Summer). But ever since I listened to his penultimate project (Atavista), ... read more
Three things convinced me to listen to this album: its presence on many 2023's end-of-year charts, the pic of JPEGMAFIA with Ye, and the hilarious name of the album, which is perfectly suited to this kind of rapper.
To listen to an album with JPEGMAFIA at the controls is to venture into a nightmarish journey hif you're not initiated. Then throw in Danny Brown, the madman, and you're not likely to come back.
The music is packed with elements that clash and don't seem to ... read more
... read more
Saba is an artist I've never given much thought to. I knew, however, that he was the kind of guy who was the darling of the specialized press. So I had to check him out.
So I turned my attention to Care For Me, which had enjoyed fine reviews when it was released in 2018, installing Saba as a sincere and gifted artist on a par with other rappers of his generation.
But therein lies the problem. Listening to this album, I can't help but think of artists other than Saba himself. This ... read more
This is the first time I've listened to a Danny Brown album. The image I've always had of him is that of a rapper in a class of his own, wacky and a pioneer of underground and experimental rap in the 2010s. To be honest, I don't know much about Danny Brown.
I took the plunge when I heard two of his latest projects: Quaranta and Scaring the Hoes.
And listening to Quaranta, everything seems to suggest that I've stumbled across his famous “maturity album”. The ... read more
Wiz Khalifa doesn't have much to prove when you study his career. He's one of the most successful rappers of the 2010 decade. And he's considered a legend by many of his younger peers.
Still, it's a shame he's on the loose so much.
That's kind of the theme with Wiz. One project after another (he released 4 mixtapes in 2023) that his fans can smoke on, but all without any real purpose.
On this tape, the vibe is chill, but that's it. Nothing to sink your ... read more
Big Hit is a great story. It's the story of a guy who did 15 years in prison for dark gang stuff in Los Angeles, and who comes back to work with his beatmaker son, to realize his dream of being a rapper. The beatmaker in question is none other than Hit-Boy... even Spike Lee wouldn't have thought of such a scenario!
Since his freedom, Big Hit has been enjoying himself. Projects with his son, a joint project with The Game, feats with Big Sean and many more. Big Hit is barely out of ... read more
The fiery verses of Conway the Machine that I heard on Hell & Nash 2 a few days ago made me want to listen to his latest project.
The temperature has dropped slightly, but we're still on a hot streak. Conway's formula remains the same. Dark street themes set to grimey, boombap beats. You can't change a winning team.
And speaking of teams, the guest rappers on this project (Ab-Soul, Method Man, Joey Bada$$) are to be commended. But we can't talk about this album ... read more
It's been a long time since I listened to a Griselda project. And what a blast it was.
Hell & Nash 2 is Westside Gunn's latest project to date. He's joined by his long-time mate, Conway The Machine, and the producer who's been enjoying a second youth for the past 5 years, The Alchemist.
On paper, it's my stuff, and in my ears, it's fire.
Although this project was released in 2023, it includes a lot of old verses from 2016/2017. An important detail, since it ... read more
When I started this album, I thought I was going to find myself listening to a strange, alternative atmosphere, as the artist's appearance would suggest. Not so. Scarlet is surprisingly accessible. Normal, you may say. After all, we're talking about one of the music industry's most prolific pop stars.
The production is brilliant, worthy of an artist of this stature, and too clean for a girl with the appearance of a flayed soul. The themes, on the other hand, seem more in line ... read more
When I launched this album, I slyly thought that a Mach-Hommy and The God Fahim duo seemed unbalanced, so much so in my mind Mach-Hommy seems untouchable.
And to my great surprise, Fahim holds his own! He can have a few average rhymes and string them together with some very, very high-level lines. In fact, I have the impression that Fahim's flashes of brilliance are a perfect match for Mach Hommy's excellent consistency.
Still, Mach-Hommy is not 100%, but even at 80%, he's ... read more
