Philmore is great as usual, Apollo bores as he can at times. I'd recommend his projects with Rashid Hadee over this one to new listeners.
This is a unique concept using Wu-inspired instrumentals and themes. Usually I don't enjoy Wu homage tapes, but this one works better than most.
I made the mistake of going into this album thinking I'd get Buck's point of view on the political landscape of 2018. Either way, it still sucks.
Some of the first raps ever on this album. You actually can hear Common's 'Universal Mind Control' track on 'No Knock'
Saba is a gifted lyricist, and always does an excellent job balancing consciousness with storytelling. However his questionable production choices and melodic hooks always lose me just enough to hold back to placing any of his albums in 80+ range.
People who enjoy this concept but wish it was executed better should check out Dagha's 'The Divorce'.
This is a great album if you've never heard their influences. If you have, you're left with a solid project that takes much inspiration from Sly & The Family Stone and Kool and the Gang.
As a long-time Blu fan who first heard him in 2007 with Below the Heavens playing a pivotal role in my life, this is his best album since then and an advancement of that sound pushed forward to 2021.
Weak hooks, weak chemistry between Blu and Mickey, and too many features ruin this for me. Nottz beats are banging as always though
When I see reviews stating that this album is for people who either "like vibe music" or "this is so good when you're high", I realized I was not the intended audience for this album.
This is an album that goes from great tracks to awful tracks effortlessly, I mean literally within one track to the next. It also has what in my opinion is a top 5 Large Professor beat in 'Built Pyramids'. I don't recommend this album.
A forgotten MC. This album is fine however I can't fight the fact it feels like it is stuck in 2005. Jin was an MC who had some hype around his name for a few years, and used BET's 106 & Park and MySpace to catapult his career. I feel like he could have had a big underground career in the 2010s similar to a Reks or even a Mac Miller. He certainly had the capability to release an album where I would rate in the 80's, but this would be the best we would get. Others may get more out of this ... read more
Rawkus was falling apart here. The best songs you can find on superior albums rather than this compilation.
I never was a huge fan of either of these artists. Raheem DeVaughn has a decent voice, but never impressed me outside of features. Despite being around DJ Jazzy Jeff early in his career, he never put out a quality project that I ever returned to. As far as Apollo Brown goes, he had a chance to show some diversity on Lovesick by bringing a different sound to a R&B/Neo-Soul album, but what he does is bring a typical generic contemporary R&B sound. Very disappointing project, but did I ... read more
This has the same problems a good percentage of Skyzoo's solo albums have: His subject matter never changes, his production choices are so and so, and his delivery is good enough. I actually am not sure I would consider myself a Skyzoo fan. I liked The Salvation in 2009. That was a very personal and introspective album that really clicked for me. Then after that, nothing clicked...until Retropolitan with Pete Rock in 2019. Then Milestones EP clicked in 2020. That's a one-to-two hot album every ... read more
I'm the lowest rating on here. I have been listening to much of Roc Marciano's discography past few days. I've enjoyed him on features recently, and was wondering if perhaps my opinion on his solo work would change as I did not care for Marcberg and Reloaded when I heard them 11 and 9 years ago. My opinion after re-listening to his discography is similar to what I initially thought. His delivery is boring, his production is simple with a loop of a sample and that's it, and he has the same ... read more
I'm more fond of Exodus than most. I thought production was better than I was expecting, at least what I would anticipate from 2021 Swizz Beatz. As far as the rapping goes, DMX will never be 1998 DMX again.. but his performance was solid in my eyes. Specifically, on the introspective tracks where its always his strong suit. Some issues I have are pretty much each guest (and there's tons) outshine him. Cohesively, it's X's best album since 'Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of my Blood' in my opinion. ... read more
A perfect example of a lost album. Coming off several prison stints, this looks on the surface to be a reflecting and honest album from T.I. It starts off as so, and completely loses direction until the final track when it once again regains that momentum (way too late). Again the first few tracks are not bad, and honest T.I. is when he's at his best. However considering this is an album that forgets its purpose and has more bad tracks than good tracks by a mile its rating must reflect so.
