Nothing comes close to matching the grandiosity and perfection of Yes' masterpiece Close to the Edge. Ever since I decided to listen to it for the first time in March (2025), it has been my favourite album of all time.
To provide some context, this was Yes' second (and last) album featuring what many (myself included) consider to be their best lineup, as drummer Bill Bruford would shortly leave to join another phenomenal prog band, King Crimson. It was also keyboardist Rick ... read more

Part 026/353: A Curious Picture You See With Your Eyes Closed
Despite being fairly pleasant (and having an awesome cover), A Curious Picture You See With Your Eyes Closed is a very unremarkable album, consisting of a swirling drone with some weird creaking noises in the background, getting more subdued at a few points but staying the same besides that. It's nothing bad, but it just feels like a rehash of loads of their previous, similar releases, making it ... read more
Album swap with @BoneyKingOfNowh
Ghost's blend of hard rock and metal isn't the kind of stuff I listen to very frequently, but I enjoyed this quite a lot nonetheless. It's fantastic instrumentally, with the guitars and keyboards having many great moments throughout, and the songs are unusually commercial for the genres listed, with most tracks having very anthemic choruses.
Following the eerie intro "Ashes", the album really gets going with "Rats", which has ... read more

Part 025/353: Tale of an Earth Man
Tale of an Earth Man is a really nice ambient album from BoH, consisting of several aquatic loops and some nature recordings, creating a lovely atmosphere, and though it doesn't change much in its hour & a quarter runtime, it's thoroughly mesmerising and enjoyable, especially as music to fall asleep to.
Ever since his 2013 breakthrough Wakin on a Pretty Daze, Kurt Vile's albums have been long and sprawling (often over an hour in length), striking a brilliant balance between concise & memorable songs (such as "Loading Zones" & "I'm an Outlaw") and longer, slower-paced numbers like "Bassackwards" or "Like Exploding Stones". But on his latest album, Philadelphia's been good to me, the sprawl is almost too much, and a lot of it ends up ... read more

Part 024/353: Some Vast Unknown
Some Vast Unknown is one of Bull of Heaven's noisier and less mesmerising pieces, consisting of a harsh and almost mechanical drone in the right channel and a deeper, less melodic sound with something akin to reversed percussion in the background on the left. It reminds me a lot of similar albums like Odd Things, Brick Buildings or Spacewalking Your New Way Home, although those were quite enjoyable due to their gradual change. ... read more
