I simply love this one. I actually didn’t like it on my first listen but when I was in the right mood for it, it was like a dark dream that you can really just lose yourself in. It’s like there’s a constant, flowing river of hypnotizing sound, and every in awhile something will raise its head above the water (a feature, a string or synth line) only to fade back into the darkness just as quickly as it came
Interesting that Ethel traded in her impressive vocal performances for more murky, sometimes spoken verses and wide open spaces of sound. This album has a lot of great, eery openness in it that does a lot with minimal production at times. Solid atmosphere, bit long for what it is but doesn’t feel nearly as dragged out as you might think given the run time. Vacillator is a big highlight, Punish as well. Could see this souring over time for me but for now it’s a solid 7.
