Barrington Hendricks was certain that this album would be a defining moment for the genre of "experimental rap." In reality, Experimental Rap is his most toothless, generic album yet, and far from experimental. Through the songs that sound AI-generated, the needlessly bitter lyrics, and the lazy sampling job on several tracks ("Lights" is a stunningly relevant example), E.R. somehow beats out Black Ben Carson, his debut, as Jpegmafia's worst album.

This album has not aged all that well. I think in 2019 I would have said it's a 7 but the production just dates it so hard that it's sort of distracting at times. Not to say there's not highlights but the songs don't mesh together into a complete body of work. I don't think I would see myself coming back to listen to the full album, but I would definitely listen to a song like Typical Story or All In My Head if I end up remembering it at any point. Relistening today in honor of Stubbs. Hopefully he's chasing after a tennis ball with "too much to ask" written on it in doggy heaven right now.
This album was Cheekface at their peak of songcraft. This album and It's Sorted make for the golden age of Cheekface to my ears.
Also, their live shows are amazing. Even if you're "eh" or "it's alright" on their studio recorded releases, go see them live if you have a chance. It's a great f-ing ... read more
