a stride so precisely in the right direction that you're gonna need a protractor. steve lacy & malcolm todd sort of form two halves of my strongest inspiration for simple songwriting, it feels weightless how they create. he holds up his part of the deal and then some on this project. Mercury makes me want to get up and dance with someone. Bad Habit might just be a perfect pop song. IDK man this is incredible work and I'll wait however long it takes for whatever's up next
steve lacy's debut is rough around the edges with some undercooked concepts and decisions i genuinely don't understand, but it paints a complete picture of his potential as an artist. there are enough tracks on here that i unequivocally love that it would have had me sold if it was my first exposure to him.
7 great songs with absolutely no bullshit is a refreshing experience. this is mostly a display of consistency and it makes perfect sense why it's been foundational for so many people
I definitely like these guys most when they're doing their most energetic work (which is still at like a 4 but we have to be relative here.) the gentle yacht rock stuff that you might hear by a pool still displays a lot of respectable musicianship but doesn't do anything to capture me, and if one of ... read more
the JRCU (jane remover cinematic universe) is becoming hard to trace
since this is basically a very polished hour long dj set i basically just rated every track based on how much fun i had
nelly really does his best work when he just accepts the prophecy of being funny and catchy but this album lowkey tried to have a plot and that's mad unfortunate
a lot of the production is pretty whatever but this is decent songs from top to bottom and would not be a disappointing cd to pop into your car on a road trip in 2002
maybe the most underrated album I've ever heard. I'd recommend this to anyone. shit, I'd recommend this to my dad. it does such an impressive job of combining nostalgic songwriting with... well, good songwriting. I feel like lots of art that emulates a different time leans on its more primitive standards as a way to try less, and that's what I'm expecting when I listen to something like this. this doesn't do that at all. he's clearly used every tool at his ... read more
this album is very nostalgic for me because my sisters loved it when I was a kid and had many of the songs (maybe all of them?) on their old mp3 player that was handed down to me. we probably have a CD of it gathering dust somewhere.
I don't have the time to do track ratings for this right now, but I still have a couple things to say. I usually need more harmonically than an album like this can provide. it's still somewhat the case here, but it's helped by being basically about ... read more
we're all over the place with this one
Dramatic Girl is obviously my favorite part of this thing, it singlehandedly brings up my album rating at least like 5 points & its no wonder thats the one sounwave is on
theres bits of nice production elsewhere, that chromatic chord change at 0:46 on $ex Appeal is so genius to me, very 2000s
but yea like some of the worst parts of this album being kendrick rolling his eyes and saying FINE ILL DO A VERSE is very characteristic of the mid thats on ... read more
I'm blown away. there's no misses. confident that this is their best work out of at least their first three albums
a testament to how rapidly he refined the subtlety of his lyrics after this album's release and honestly even within the runtime of the album itself. i liked the second half a lot better
if it's wrong to bandwagon then sue me because there's not much that can top this. also i don't know why the heart part 5 isn't on the songs list but it's an 100
this shit just simply cannot be a 68 but i rated it in 2024 and there's no way i'm listening to this whole album again
