Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly

A truly incredible album, no doubt a masterpiece filled with exciting, well thought out production, incredible vocal performances from Kendrick and his features, an emotive message and an interesting self-examination of Kendrick's own character from the man himself. Tracks like "u" bring me close to tears on repeat listens, and this albums confidence cannot be understated. Wesley's Theory is maybe the best opening to any album ever. That track alone has incredible production, a genius ... read more

Tyler, The Creator - IGOR

An interesting album for me.
If you had asked me after my first listen I'd have probably given it a 60 or 55. It doesn't strike me much, really - it's a shame that it has a few forgettable tracks. With a worse album, however, these weak tracks would have me wanting the album to end - instead, it makes me want the album to move on to the better things I know it has in store.
It's produced incredibly, but that goes without saying.
GONE GONE / THANK YOU is an almost perfect song and ARE WE STILL ... read more

So good
Track-by-track breakdown because that's easy and I'm getting lazy

1. William, It Was Really Nothing - 100/100
One of my favourite songs, lyrically, of all time. An instantly capturing first line - "The rain falls hard, on a humdrum town. This town has dragged you down". It instantly grabs your attention. The lyrical prowess remains throughout the compilation - it's an extremely angry song, to the point of actual misogyny, but it's so laughable that it's hard to take its ... read more

The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead

So close to being a 100.
It's one of my favourite albums of all time - "I Know It's Over", while laughable and self-pitying, is also equally self-conscious and partially tragic. "I know it's over / and it never really began / but in my heart, it was so real" is so pressingly, emotively human. Though it is easy to laugh at The Smith's self-pitying ballads, The Smiths laugh at itself and its concept as well. The Queen Is Dead is a thoroughly satirical album, with some tracks ... read more

This album is a masterpiece.
It almost feels weird to say, because if I'm being honest, not every track on this album is a 10/10. Not even the majority are 10/10.
This album managed to work this out into a cohesive project which connects its ideas flawlessly. It's probably the individual album I've listened to most in my life.
Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst is one of the best songs of all time - a perfect song, with some of Kendrick's best rapping performances, brimming with emotion and ... read more

Kanye West - The College Dropout

An incredible debut album filled with memorable tunes and fun lyricism. It's genuinely funny, a trait that Kanye has lost over the years. "Through the Wire" is confident and well-produced. "We Don't Care" shows not only Kanye's humour but also his ability to make catchy and listenable music while touching on social issues in an approachable and comical way. One thing I will say is that the features aren't as good as in other Kanye projects, and there is some bloating - the ... read more
