this album took 3 years to click with me, but god has it left an imprint on me. before i thought it was pretentious indie, but now i truly realize the beauty of this record. each song flows into the next, and conjures emotions that music doesn't usually make me me feel. this is truly one of the most emotionally affecting records i've ever heard, on par with depression cherry.
this album is all killer no filler. just half an hour of catchy rock and roll that never gets old. every song on here is concise and to the point, and doesn't waste time. they manage to ride the line of pretentiousness very well, and the lyrics come off as calculated yet carefree. favorites are nyc cops, hard to explain, and soma.
having a troubled creation, this album took over a year and millions of dollars to make, with the members plagued by writers block, personal and technical issues, and perfectionism taken to the nth degree. it even caused the band to break up for 12 years. but despite the setbacks and tribulations, they managed to create the best album of their career. this album is often seen as overly polished and smooth, sounding like steely dan taken too far. however, i view this as their magnum opus. this ... read more
