I’ve never liked Malcolm Todd, and I never expected to like this album at all and I was right, I didn’t. Somehow though, it still managed to be worse than I could’ve imagined. The opening track, Jean Skirt, shows off all of my grievances with the project best through its shallow, juvenile, and overall lazy attempt at writing that never moves past surface level ideas. Instead, it focuses on overly explicit imagery about his partner’s body in a way that feels uninteresting ... read more
I didn’t expect to like Studio Addict at all when I first listened a few months ago, but now it has become a personal favorite mixtape from the underground in the last few years. Nine Vicious excels especially on his more aggressive side. When he raps over more intense beats like “F&N” or “Just Landed,” it combines wonderfully with his harsher vocal inflection. I feel like a lot of musical commentary tends to rely on metaphors that you really have to dive deep into to understand, ... read more
Hype Williams and more specifically Dean Blunt have been artists/groups I’ve enjoyed a lot over the last two years, and this project is one of the best demonstrations of what intrigues me so much about their music. Dean Blunt, at least to me, feels less like a “musician” or “producer” and more like a creative visionary. The way he puts ideas together feels more like a collage or mural than a regular beat or song. Even if the finished idea is not always the ... read more
