A masterpiece of bliss and anguish.
Sunbather is one of my favorite albums of all time. Deafheaven's masterpiece has bestowed upon me countless ascensions into some distant, spectral plane. I feel like I definitely like this way more than most people. I’ve always been a pretty big basement fan and this has some of their catchiest songs to date. It often lacks that earlier intensity that I still crave, but it’s still a thoroughly enjoyable listen that I can see myself coming back to frequently. It’s just very repeatable. My favorites here are “Head Alight,” “WIRED,” and “Longshot.”
Love on the Catwalk is incredible. Nothing else stands out much to me but it’s solid screamo.
I think the singles are still my two favorite tracks, so unfortunately I expected this to be a lot better than it was. Still another enjoyable record from them, but I can’t help but wish it was more like their debut with the unique song structures and beautiful layers of guitar. This album has a lot of mushy reverb, and while it still sounds quite nice, it kinda fades into the background.
