My god. What a heartbreaking album. Julien’s situation is absolutely exposed and she goes all-in on how her addiction has affected her life. From suicidal thoughts, the hurt she brought on other people, to her insufficiency to forgive herself, this is such a real and raw lyrical undertaking. Julien doesn’t sugarcoat her situation at all and drops line after line of how dire her mental state really is.

In just a short 40 minutes, Black Country, New Road has already solidified their contribution to the Post Rock genre. Each song is an adventure that you are not sure if you want to take, but glad you did in the end. The group’s diverse instrumentation and bold song structure keeps your attention and demands it from start to finish.

This album has a lot to say in its short run time from negative to positive situations in a relationship. It brings up some topical subjects ranging from sexual discrimination against women, relationship struggles, identity related to sex, and even the rough breakups that can occur. Some tracks execute these ideas better than others, but the overall diversity of narratives is something to be admired.
The instrumentation equally compliments the distinct lyrics by fitting the mood it is trying ... read more
