Production is perfected on this latest release. Yorke and company are grand audio storytellers and have the budget to realize their creativity.
I once worked with an emo lover. He threw coffee on me when I told him The Promising Ring were not going to help us sell more of an Operation Ivy tribute album. Production is punchy which is a plus. The engineer probably has a great album collection with all the REM and Flying Burrito Brothers albums.
It’s hard to make an ambient or downtempo album. This is a light and bubbly selection of songs where one will be feeling more Vangelis than Eno. I could hear some interesting remixes of a few of the songs but a quick search leads me to only Jean Michael Jarre.
Brooding alt-pop with the full late 60s Tom Jones production treatments. A heavy Father John Misty vibe without being derivative makes for a lush listening experience.
Quirky alt-pop with a little irony and wonderful instrumental arrangements. Reminds me of 4 Non Blondes writing and has a 90s San Francisco vibe with an Aimee Mann twist.
This is a great surprise. Harkins to the lovely pop melodies of ABBA with the sensibility of Dolly Parton. Poignant without being sappy.
What a voice! So in touch with Smokey and that’s a great thing! Remembering the nu-soul movement of 94-96 will put this album in context but what you need is a dance floor as this is a banger.
Remember Indian Bingo on Independent Project Records? Yep. Think if you’ve been missing Sun Kill Moon and want to be slightly more cheerful then this release should be in regular rotation.
This album is lush and deserving of wide attention. The comparison to World Party is clear and if you dig Karl’s song writing and production you’ll dig WHYTB.
I want to experience the rest of life with the same dynamic/creative range this album brings to my ears. It's a warm cup of tea satisfying and relaxing. The album brings a younger Art Ensemble of Chicago after listening all night to Mahavishnu Orchestra vibe to this listener. Recommended for those who enjoy The Cinematic Orchestra with some warm milk and cookies.
If Nina Simone and Johnny Hartman met Crispen Glover and decided to make music which defied the conventional. Arrangements, especially Rat, made me hear Nick Drake in an argument with Roger Waters. Highly recommended without reservation.
I could be the wrong person to review this as I was just digging my Sea Level playlist, but here goes. The sweet swinging beat of Love You Bad makes me feel like an Isley’s album circa Between The Sheets. From My Heart and My Soul give a tip of the D’Angelo cap with a tad more psychedelic seasoning. A non-revolutionary Gil-Scott Heron would approve of many of the tunes on this album because of their slow dancing appeal. Kasami Washington is a good edition to the production of First ... read more
I would recommend this album to all Lucinda Williams fans who never got over LW NOT replicating Passionate Kisses. Both in lyricism and musicality. I’m new to her music and am immediately a fan. Highly recommended.
A beautiful tribute without being derivative. Great production I can not wait to hear it on vinyl.
Wonderful compositions with a CTI Records feel. Jazzy but soft and warm for a lo-fi quite storm. Highly recommended.
