I mean, yeah it's pretty good. The band clearly has potential. I do have some problems with the release. It doesn't feel too original, the songs at times feel like they blend in together, and I feel the vocalist's performances and melodies throughout the album kinda just feel the same (long, sustained melodies with mild vocal distortion). None of these make the album bad, but they do hold it back, for me.
Finally listening to this album like two years late. In some sense it's a bit more consistent in style than God's Country, and it doesn't stray too far from the sound there, though it does end up sounding fatter, heavier, at least for me. And it works and I like it a lot, though sometimes I wish they could switch it up a bit more. I think Busch has actually improved as a vocalist; I find him more expressive and with greater range. I might prefer the second half, as they are more ... read more
I was pretty excited when the anglophile music nerd, AOTY/RYM crowd were raving about a Chilean album, given that I am Chilean. Certainly feels quite Chilean, in its references to Chilean literature (which I am not too educated on, unfortunately), as well feeling like it responds to the context of the 2019-2021 protests and the following failure of the constitutional plebiscite, both of which my family were heavily invested in, even as we lived abroad (or in the "estranjero.").

A pure triumph of creativity and originality. It doesn't sound like a random mash-up of styles and ideas, but a developed, cohesive statement that is political and religious as it is musical. It's anticolonial music done with zeal and conviction.
Not a bad debut. Frankly, a lot of the songs sound like what the White Stripes should've sounded like. Properly raw, manic, and intense, coupled with psychedelic touches. At the end of the day though, blues-rock revivalism will only have so much appeal to me, and a lot of the melodies have some of those poppy indie cliches I'm not the biggest fan of. Perhaps most importantly, I know enough about the band to know that greater things are ahead of this, and that this isn't their ... read more
Obviously not as refined as either version of Twin Fantasy, but of the two pre-TF CSH albums I've heard so far, I'd say this is probably my favourite. There's so much energy on display and Toledo still displays a lot of wit, humour, and talent with vocal melodies and harmonies.
This was super enjoyable; atmospheric, yet also catchy and upbeat. Overall, a really fun album.
Edit: just listened to the whole thing again; and honestly, I love it even more now than I already did.
Rating went up from 88 to 91.
The minimalistic, repetitive, and atmospheric style of the seven songs make for a pretty compelling album.
Different from what she made later, but you can see the progression. It’s alright but forgettable. (As a sidenote, the intro is quite disturbing, and frankly tasteless)
The first half has some good, if sorta underdeveloped, stuff. The second half is just great.
Kinda disappointed. Given the hype and who’s in the band, I expected better. Prefer the debut.
The tracks here are lush, expansive and beautiful, especially in the latter half; this album’s great.
Incredibly abrasive, and for that it’s really enjoyable, although it could be shorter and more focused.
Sounded amazing and beautiful, though I do think they refined the sound on their self-titled album.
