Been listening to this for a while but never really got around to rate/review it (even though these short and loose thoughts I write down are far from actual reviews), generally enjoying this tho. I do tend to get disappointed in the lack of consistency on the tracklist, as the obvious superstar tracks are few and far between on this 17-track long album, leaving a lot of just good/great songs in the dust. Regardless, Quik's a wicked producer, and he sure makes that clear on tracks such as ... read more
This shit right here. Should be longer, it’s unhealthy for me to keep replaying it
Tasty as fuck. Some of these tracks have some serious fucking basslines too. Glad to know that I'm just getting obsessed with this right before her new album, gotta hear some more of her work.
serious gems in this deluxe. track 5, 7 and 8 are my favorites
Smooth, satisfying, instrumentally admirable, eclectic, pretty, and more. Doesn't exactly hit the same consistency mark that Voodoo could boast; it's mostly competing with Brown Sugar for 2nd in his discography, which - it has to be said - would still be a remarkable feat. Besides, I wouldn't get too angry with you if you were to crown Another Life or Really Love as the best song in his career. Extraordinary project. Rest in peace, legend.
Edit - 7/4-2026: Beyond perfect. The atmosphere this album creates is genuinely unlike anything else I've ever heard. Unreal. 98 -> 100.
Yep yep yep this is definitely one of them ones. Just like it's the case for other sensational albums I've listened to recently, I wish it was longer or that he at least made some other project comparable to this one in quality. Pretty much unlike anything I've ever listened to - an INCREDIBLY impressive album and one of the greatest ... read more
So good Jesus Christ… For every day that goes by, I get more and more convinced that 70’s soul is the best era of music any genre could ever boast. The pure amount of mindboggingly good tracks in this time period is just insane to me.
Fucking incredible. So heavenly, beautiful, touching and unique, truly an album not fit for categorization. I'm so easily won over by his voice, he utilizes the production perfectly. Naturally, there are lots of heavyweights on this album - the track-run from Tabú into Raíz in particular is just flooring. If I really had to pick my favorites it would have to be the title track, Puente, and Beautiful, but I rarely find myself not enjoying the fuck out of this shit. Incredible.
Genuinely a generational song in the truest sense of the word. Pretty revolutionary for the genre too as far as I'm aware
Crazy how the two best songs on the album are back-to-back. As into Another Star HAS to be the greatest two-track-run ever.
Pretty addictive. He boasts a production style that's rarely done well - at least that's my impression - but most of the time, these beats more than hit the mark. Some are even quite pretty and make for some really heartwarming songs - Neverland and Re-Anna show this. I don't really find him to be as corny as other listeners have experienced, his approach is just so down-to-earth that he might come off as sort of a cornball at times - we all are in some way though.

Edit: 98 -> 100: TELL ME THE FLAW
Basically all I've been listening to lately. Being dark, creepy, and filled to the brim with industrial elements and sounds, this was pretty much made for me. SO glad their disputes during the making of the album were pushed aside to create this beautiful piece of music, as it's definitely one of the most unique albums and very difficult to categorize with only one genre - just calling this Trip Hop won't cut it. Very consistent too, ... read more
Yes, I know I have an entire account made for rating and commenting on/reviewing singles. This song is just so perfect though. If home and peace of mind was a song, this would be it (gotta be the corniest sentence I've put together during my time on this website). Absolutely incredible. I cannot stress enough how fucking incredible this song is. If possible, I'd rate this a 200. Probably my favorite song of all time. I cannot get enough.
Legendary.
If we were to name notable figures in the 70's soul era, Curtis Mayfield demands a mention as much as anyone. Not just since he contributed with ear candy of the highest order, both in voice and instrumentation, no. Commenting on societal issues in music was, especially regarding black artists, by no means ordinary back then, however, Curtis sure contributed to the theme gaining steam.
This album, while definitely touching the aforementioned theme in different songs, also ... read more
A remarkable debut is what this is. For a rapper this new and inexperienced in the game, it's truly impressive. The project is cohesive and well curated, the project flows so well, you'd think he'd done this many times before. As for Vaughn's performances on the album, they're high quality and impressive, not only in terms of the lyrical content, swiftly shifting from brash and swaggy to vulnerable and heartfelt, but just as much the emotion-filled yet entertaining ... read more
Edit: 87 -> 91: Consistent as shit. Wish this was the music playing in the clubs.
Slaps. Might be a tiny bit front-loaded, however, it really isn't that big of a deal. Plenty of highlights and bops throughout its length.
My old review made me puke. It's a damn shame the lyrics are as uninteresting as they are, because the production honestly leaves me speechless most of the time. A good example is 8ig 8's performance on Confrontation. The beat is fucking madness to put it bluntly, but then this cornball goes on to spit some of the wackest shit I've seen in a fucking minute. I do not know which of the following bars is worse: "Penmanship ridiculous, to speak to me you need permission", ... read more
