It's not even a bad album, BUT that one stretch of songs between Tough Love and Free Now is really brutal. I Knew It, I Know You is a song I do need to have grow on me and Normal Thing is better than the other 2, but oh Lord is that stretch boring. I thought everyone was overexaggerating Good Luck Charlie with the score, but that was exhausting. The deluxe proves that she really should have prioritized her deluxe tracks because Cool, That's So True, I Told You Things, and Packing It ... read more
This was my first Conan Gray album and I was inspired by his VMAs performance of Vodka Cranberry to finally go out of my way to listen to it. There's not a single song on this album that I would consider a skip. He really shines with his writing and this is giving a streamlined Red album type of energy and that's EXACTLY what I'm looking for right now. Wishbone autumn anyone?

Unlike Teenage Dream, a good majority of tracks on Smile are ones that I wouldn't skip. This album took me by surprise because the ones around it are significantly worse than this one which helps elevate a project that was already good. The album immediately grabs you from the first track and continues an energetic, albeit derivative, thematic through line which makes me believe that Katy Perry has the potential to pull out another great album. The problem is that for every interesting ... read more
I was going to review Smile and then 143, but I don't want to end on this. I don't need to reiterate what everyone's already said about this album. I find it to be a guilty pleasure. I put it on every now and then when I'm driving for mindless noise. I could very easily just put on something better, but sometimes I do just want music that is, ironically, soulless. I don't entirely blame Katy for partnering up with Dr. Luke because I wonder if she even had a choice in ... read more
Yeah, 143 has some flops, but I really hated this album. The first time I listened to it, I felt like I was stuck in purgatory. None of these songs would end and it was actually despicable. This was Katy's infamous era which had the most manufactured "real" experience with the Witness Experience. I'd say she should be ashamed of it, but I think she already tries to pretend this didn't happen.
