Thad Jones’s trumpet is enchanting. I feel his time with Basie is apparent throughout the album. It’s tight, but not too tight, which I think is also super representative of big band. I don’t know too much about Mel Lewis, but his drumming is very good, especially on Bachafillen. His solo into the band just exploding is great. LP lacks a sense of character. While I did enjoy the integration of Latin elements, they feel underused and need a push. The first side of the LP starts off with two great songs, “California Dreaming” and “Light My Fire,” which are clear highlights. The second side is largely unmemorable, and where the weaknesses of the LP shine the brightest.
