A glorious return from Patrick Wolf. Waiting 14 years for a new album (or 13 if you count Sundark & Riverlight), listening to this record feels like meeting an old friend you haven't seen in so long, but talking as if you had never been apart. This is a somber record, but it is beautiful, containing gorgeous string arrangements and some chaotic electronic sounds here and there, reminiscent of his early work. Love hearing Gaga so inspired like this! I remember watching the Abracadabra video premiere and feeling the kind of excitement I felt around her work in college. I'd cut a couple of songs out, but otherwise a great album, phenomenal first half run.
HIGHLIGHTS: Abracadabra, Zombieboy, Killah, Vanish Into You
I remember first hearing some of these songs and thinking they sounded generic, such as when Slugger first came out. But then I caught myself singing "My my my my my..." in the shower and you know what "nocturnal like Chopin melodies" is SUCH a good line.
These songs really grow on you after a few listens and the melodies are quite sticky. I can see why people may not like it compared to her previous work, but it's a fun record!

I'm a big fan of Ichiko's Windswept Adan and 0 albums, and love the lone singles she's released in the past few years. But this album doesn't do it as much for me. It's still beautiful, it's still soothing, but I can't help but feel there's something missing in some of these tracks. Perhaps I need to give it more spins, or maybe I would've gotten it if I hadn't missed her live show. Time will tell.
