Various Artists - No New York
93

As a fan of Sonic Youth I was recommended to check this compilation out. On first listen I only liked the Contortions tracks, but it's held up really well with time (DNA especially have grown on me).
A lot of the tracks here are like shoegaze in their mixing and composition, with many elements fighting in similar frequency ranges (what people today would call "bad" and "unclear"), which some listeners might find off-putting (along with the aggressive guitars and vocals ... read more

surprised how consistent it all is and how well it flows

Should - Feed Like Fishes
NR

on first listen the album is very nice, quite atmospheric.

standouts: it still would

Cloud Nothings - Cloud Nothings

This is my tied for my second-favourite Cloud Nothings record (tied with Turning On), and it does hold up on re-listens.

"chex" and "untitled #6" were my faves

Cloud Nothings - Final Summer
90

i've never listened to anything by cloud nothings before this so i was taken aback by the very low user number here.

maybe something like "attack on memory" or another of their previous albums is "better", and maybe i'll even think so when i listen to it,

but i really like this.

very fun 11 songs (yes i am counting the bonus track "the prince"), with the majority being highlights.
maybe not with the most intricate of lyrics and composition, but ... read more

listened to because of the album cover appearing in my "more albums" feed off of something else

really cool production, blends some electronic, shoegaze??, and other sounds in a way i haven't seen before

it's not perfect in a very nice way, e.g the drumming sometimes

will definitely relisten

Ladyhawke - Ladyhawke
87

this is probably because of nostalgia, but i really like everything on here. some slightly more than others. "morning dreams" and the deluxe tracks to me are far less memorable.

favourites (though i could easily add more):

magic
my delirium
better than sunday
another runaway
love don't live here
back of the van
crazy world

MONO - Hey, You
70

the version of "Karelia" on here, disappointingly, is just a slightly lower-fi version of the one on "Pipal Tree"

the rest of the tracks on here are alright, though I think with early MONO especially, it gets better with more relistens.

Yo La Tengo - Electr-O-Pura
65

i read some of the reviews before first listening, and this was a bit different from my expectations.
firstly, it's a lot less "loud" or "noisy" then some of the reviews say, at least to my tastes.
I also found the performances on here to be a bit off most of the time, like a bit out of time. I don't remember which track, but there was one which started with some weird guitar-like loop that went into some drumming, and vocals from Georgia, which seemed particularly ... read more

Duster - Stratosphere
90

the amount of ripoffs this has caused in the years following is crazy

the album itself is great and i like most of the tracks on here, but there are so many people copying this style that it makes 'stratosphere' just a bit worse.

favourites:
heading for the door
gold dust
topical solution
docking the pod
echo, bravo
the queen of hearts
inside out (though maybe overplayed)
reed to hillsborough
stratosphere (probably my favourite)
earth moon transit

(looking back at my list of ... read more

Sigh Of Relief - Injection
85

i know of 'injection' purely because a link to bubba's website from the new year's, a good ambient album.

i listened to 'injection' at the lowest possible volume while doing work and this was great for that. sits well in the back of your mind, or maybe just knowing that something is playing does. in any case, this added to my time.

i give this an 85 because i see no flaws in it as an ambient album, not higher because of the nature of purely ambient music for me ... read more
