I gave this album a try.
Disingenuine punk rock wanna-be Machine Gun Kelly makes a very angsty yet misguided album about his unoriginal takes on shallow relationships, "emotions," drinking, and making bad choices that comes off very bland. He really wants us to know that he's cool and does drugs while talking to his friends on the phone, so much so that he made an interlude about it.
The whole thing felt fake and devoid of depth.
Over half of the songs are Oliver playing guitar in the key of G with some hip hop beats thrown in, culminating in an unfortunately forgettable album with maybe 2 songs that sort of stand out. Oliver's vision on this album left a lot to be desired and I think he can do better.
This album is a fusion of modern trap-style Hip Hop and melody-driven, emotional R&B. SAINt JHN's brand of singing can't be simply pigeon-holed to sing-rap; his vocal style is uniquely his own. His note choice and gritty timbre form a beautiful baritone lead. In my personal opinion, this is one of the most ambitious, unapologetic, innovative albums in 21st century pop music.
