Right off the bat, Sufjan creates an ominous soundscape in the opening rendition of O Come O Come Emmanuel which serves as a foreshadowing of the darkness to come on this EP. Sufjan's second installment in Songs for Christmas continues the trend of starting with an instrumental piece, and containing a hymn that has nothing to do with Christmas. The main difference between Hark! and Noel, however, is that Sufjan knocks in out of the park with this one. His rendition of I Saw Three Ships is incredible - it's one of the happiest, most pure sounding pieces of music I've heard. Likewise, Once in Royal David's City is just as joyous. Let's celebrate Christmas by reviewing all 10 of Sufjan's Christmas volumes!

This first EP, recorded in 2001, is a very fun listen. The most distinctive quality it has is its incredibly unique harmonies all over it.
