Drake - ICEMAN
50

Rappin Drizzy. A few decent tracks, but overall pretty mid. He's written better verses and he mostly plays the victim here and throws subs. This makes the songs very samey after a while.

Every album he's released since 2016 has been bloated and excessive, but 3 albums in one day is insane. Sounds like this is the best of the bunch.

FAV TRACKS: Make Them Cry, Ran to Atlanta, Burning Bridges, What Did I Miss?

Jeff Rosenstock - I Look Like Shit
70

Not as much depth as his later stuff has, but a good start to his solo catalogue.

FAV TRACKS: Twinkle, The Trash the trash the trash, Snow Charges

American Football - American Football
70

These guys dropped an album at the end of their college years, said see ya, then dipped for 17 years. Meanwhile that album becomes a cult indie classic and then these guys decide to get back together and record an album in their 40s.

The result? Not bad. They have this really interesting brand of progressive emo/indie/folk that is nice to listen to. Mostly sad and longing, but an upbeat track here and there. As good as follow up to that first album could be.

Michael Jackson - Bad
70

Not as consistently great as Thriller or as timeless. Deep cuts are not as good. But altogether not a bad listen.

FAV TRACKS: Bad, Dirty Diana, The Way You Make Me Feel, Smooth Criminal

Isaiah Rashad - IT'S BEEN AWFUL
60

ITS BEEN FINE more like.

Just don’t like his delivery as much. It’s like hushed and mumbled? Not sure how to describe it.

Not his best work imo

Converge & Chelsea Wolfe - Bloodmoon: I
70

Very different than anything they’ve ever done.

Goth, sludge, doom metal.

Moments of melody shine through with the help of Chelsea Wolfe.

An album that would go hard around Halloween.

FAV TRACKS: Viscara of Men, Tongues Playing Dead, Failure Forever

Steely Dan - Pretzel Logic
80

More jazzy than yachty.

Gives lots of variety within the tracklist.

Such an easy listen!

FAV TRACKS: Rikki Don't Lose that Number, Night by Night, Pretzel Logic

Flying Lotus - Until the Quiet Comes
80

Sounds like a dream.

Very chill compared to the two albums it is sandwiched between.

I actually like this one quite a bit, might be my second favorite from Lotus.

Converge - The Dusk in Us
80

Their most brooding and atmospheric batch of tracks that I've heard yet.

The vocals are probably the clearest they have ever been, but it does not dampen the ferocity and rage of the music.

A whole new level of emotion here.

Could see this getting even better with time.

FAV TRACKS: A Single Tear, Eye of the Quarrel, I Can Tell You About Pain, The Dusk in Us

Converge - No Heroes
70

Very passionate description of the album by the band.

Lyrically, I love the direction this album took.

Not as exciting as the insane 1-2 punch of Jane Doe and You Fail Me, but still a ride.

FAV TRACKS: Vengeance, No Heroes, Hellbound

Vince Staples & Larry Fisherman - Stolen Youth
50

Alright the beats are kind of mid. I like Mac Miller but was not impressed with his beats here, they just sounded really amateur. Definitely not his best work.

As for Vince: also not his best work. He had potential from the jump and is a natural storyteller, but still needed a few more projects to hone in on that.

Not something I would return to.

FAV TRACKS: Bacc Selling Crack

80

Even crazier than Cosmogramma.

A collage of different sounds, but they all flow together so nice.

More like a composer than a producer.

I love the amount of time Thundercat gets on here as well, phenomenal bass playing.

The great unknown and mystery of death.

Black Country, New Road - Ants From Up There
70

A much more somber record than For the first time.

Just really interesting compositions with powerful crescendos.

A lot more melodic than their debut. Vocals are not my favorite. Not sure if I would listen to any of these tracks on their own, but a decent listen as a whole.

FAV TRACKS: Good Will Hunting, Chaos Space Marine

Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma
80

Cosmic funky electronica space jazz.

Could work as background music, but has a lot to reward you with if you give it more attention too.

Feels very far ahead, even today.

FAV TRACKS: And the World Laughs With You, Mmmmhmmm, Do the Astral Plane

Flying Lotus - 1983
70

A forerunner to the "Lofi Beats to Study/Relax To" genre.

Not as crazy and adventurous as some of his later stuff, but innovative for its time.

Does a just a tiny bit more for me than those lofi beats playlists.

Nine Inch Noize - Nine Inch Noize
80

Saw NIN + Boyz Noize on the Peel it Back Tour and it was incredible.

A remix album I feel like I was a part of; felt like I was there to see this creative partnership in motion.

Basically just the Coachella set, but very glad it’s available for streaming. Some NIN classics get new life breathed into them and some deep cuts get a fresh coat of paint. Love the new versions of these songs. There is something for every NIN fan here.

FAV TRACKS: Vessel, She’s Gone Away, Heresy, ... read more

Seatbelts - Cowboy Bebop
80

Jazzy, but kinda weird and off the wall.

Entertaining.

Works well not only as a soundtrack album, but also as a jazz album in general.

FAV TRACKS: Tank!, Bad Dog No Biscuits, Space Lion, Rain, Memory

Converge - When Forever Comes Crashing
70

The band really began to come into its sound: hardcore punk mixed with sludge metal mixed with thrash.

Songs are a lot more focused and high impact. Ten Cents might be the most beautiful and melodic moment I've heard from them so far.

Vocals are ferocious.

Sets the stage for the incredible follow up.

FAV TRACKS: My Unsaid Everything, The High Cost of Playing God, Conduit, Letterbomb

Big Thief - Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You
80

Not heard much from this band, but I’m so glad I checked them out.

Something for everyone on here, a mix of indie, pop, alternative country. Creates a kaleidoscope of interesting sounds and moments. Its runtime doesn’t get old, cause there’s so much to enjoy.

Vocals are so delicate and beautiful, lyricism is super surreal and existential.

Cosmic folk.

FAV TRACKS: Change, Time Escaping, Spud Infinity, Red Moon, No Reason, Promise is a Pendulum, Simulation Swarm

Poison the Well - You Come Before You
90

The band’s heavy and melodic elements really coalesce into a fully formed sound on You Come Before You.

Still so angsty, and probably the best vocal performance I’ve heard from them so far.

Flows together super smoothly and is also the most cohesive listen of their discog so far.

FAV TRACKS: Ghostchant, The View From Here is a Brick Wall, Apathy Is a Cold Body, Loved Ones, For a Bandaged Iris
