Amaarae - BLACK STAR
100

It's as big as Yeezus or Astroworld in sonic rewards, and even better in execution. She's here there and everywhere, she's oozing in desire and destiny, she is the black star!

Morningwood - Nth Degree

This was a free single on iTunes and when my mom heard me playing it, she made me delete it because of the lyrics. For that I'll forever love it! So campy and silly. I wish they had another great song.

Porches - Shirt

I'm just not getting what the critics are seeing here. Grating vocals, juvenile lyrics, and production that loses focus fast and never quite recovers. His schtick was fun for awhile, but his last 3 releases have had diminishing returns and little growth.

Christine and the Queens - HOPECORE
82

Such an interesting, raw, and cool project. What's here is certainly no polished product, but rather a revealingly authentic take on House inspirations. His self-leaking of the project really makes it feel like a special secret, something so antithetical to everything happening in the music industry right now. A rebellious spirit, his passion comes through sometimes stronger than ever in these tracks. But their rawness is sometimes distracting, and it makes you wonder how these songs would ... read more

Alison Goldfrapp - The Love Reinvention

JFC, Richard X and James Greenwood just absolutely go nuts throughout this whole thing. Like Crooked Machine from a few years ago, I just adore producers taking a second pass at their work with free reign, but in this case, I've got to say this is definitively a much better project than the original record. Where some of the production on the original fell a bit flat, this iteration punches everything up to 11.

Cindy Wilson - Realms

The mixing does a disservice to an iconic voice. However, the vibe alone is worth a listen.

Alison Goldfrapp - The Love Invention

Well it's clearly not for everyone! On her first solo endeavor, she absolutely nails it for me. Dancey, bright, flourishes of light dappling over the dancefloor...this album is succinct, and exploratory in a way that reminds me of Grace Jones' Slave to the Rhythm concept, with multiple iterations of Fever and Digging Deeper showcasing her ability to meld and reiterate, with incredible production from Claptone, Paul Woodford, Richard X all showcasing their production chops. Some of it is a slow ... read more

Billlie - the Billage of perception: chapter three

Their music producers and team nail it again, making the entire experience of their releases feel full of life, lore, and care. Kpop b-sides are rarely as considered, let alone threading through multiple projects. It's also obvious they went deeper here toward a specific sound they've worked to establish and which their fans love. That trademark sound flows through every track here, and boy is it just about perfect.

U.S. Girls - Bless This Mess
85

The luxe 80's frills here are just SOOOO good if that's your thing. This record is definitely not for everyone, but if you vibe with Holy Ghost!, The Magician, Chromeo, Nancy Whang, etc. then you'll definitely GET it. Sure, it's not going to be anyone's AOTY, but why does it have to be? I think people have too much expectation with her, every project has been unique and it's clear she's a crafty experimentalist. Excited to see what she does next.

Gorillaz - Cracker Island
72

For every triumph (New Gold, Cracker Island, Oil, and Tormenta) there's definitely a lull here, which is a consistent issue throughout his discography. Unfortunately, the rollout leading with a slow drip of singles that ended up being the best songs here leave the album feeling eroded of interest. It's hard to be excited about an album you've been staring at, half-added to your library, for 8 months when the payoff is so...whelming.

Whitney - Spark
62

Something ironic about this one being named Spark...they're starting to feel quite one-note.

Billlie - the Billage of perception: chapter two
88

This has no business being this good...every song on here is solid, Ring Ma Bell is a standout title track that will make the hair on your neck stand up and the b-sides are diverse and well-produced.

The Range - Mercury
92

His sample-heavy style might not be for everyone, but it's definitely for me personally and this project is a superior, gleaming example of his unique production skills. An elevated take on his previous work that feels more grand and saturated.

Destroyer - June
96

he's 3 for 3! so fucking excited for this album

Bob Moses - The Silence in Between
88

They definitely have their own unique groove and I never really get tired of it personally. It's still icy, haunting, and richly textured here, but with some pretty damn catchy hooks and moments. An improvement on their last two releases.

TWICE - Formula of Love: O+T=<3
81

This one was always going to struggle to keep pace with the quality they've been on a roll with since Fancy, especially considering how much material they've put out in the past few years. While it isn't a strong as a full package, it definitely has some highs. JYP should really let the girls and the songwriters take a breath after this one.

Kacy Hill - Simple, Sweet, and Smiling
86

This one kinda came out of the blue, but I'll never complain about fresh Jim-E productions. This is surprisingly more concise and richer than her last album, even though it shares similar DNA. Definitely gonna grow on me with every listen.

Lea Porcelain - Choirs to Heaven
88

A really spectacular set of songs here. Better than their debut record, these songs sound like melancholy, a rainy night walk through back alleys, very eerie and somehow universal. If you're looking for an upper you aren't going to find it here, but if you're looking for a uniquely honest mirror for the human condition, you're in luck.

Imogen Heap - Speak for Yourself
100

If you don't get it then that's on you. This is not only her best record, but probably THE definitive indietronica opus. I guess I'm partial because it was one of the first albums I ever listened to all the way through as a kid, but it's really a masterpiece of a one-woman show (plus some Jeff Beck).

Immi poured her heart and soul into this record, and you can almost feel the haunt in her voice of the catharsis. I've always interpreted it as an entire relationship, deconstructed into it's ... read more

CAPSULE - Capsule RMX
94

Their best effort ever, YSTK re-conceptualizes a good chunk of their best tunes here into even more crafted, complex tracks that feel like they tell their story better than anything else they'd released to this point.
