Gryffin - Alive
60

When I stumbled on the track "forever" back in 23, it is the last one that I had been reminded of the carefree joyful taste I had in the 2010s when mainstream EDM ruled my taste for years on end. I always look back and am grateful that even when I was so unconfident with so much of myself as a teen I still was unashamed in my enjoyment of cheesy electro pop tunes and just let lose and had fun with them. Now after my tastes has evolved to this point I now see that these kind of tracks ... read more

John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
60

Lovely Textured Jazz from the legend. Just nothing that rouses my spirits. Was a pleasant sonic journey, but not the most memorable one. Will probably revisit again a few years down the road and see if my perspective changes.

Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
50

Yeah, he isn't for me. And that's fine. Plenty of other fish in the ocean.

Bob Dylan - Bringing It All Back Home
50

I starting to genuinely think that Bob Dylan just isn't for me...

Nina Simone - Pastel Blues
100

Back in early spring of 2023 when I first dedicated myself to the project of listening to acclaimed music from 1965 to today, this was the album that stood out to me the most when I was practically skimming the top results of of that particular year. For that reason only I have it to this day as my 1965 AOTY. But today marks me challenging it's top spot with a long overdue revaluation. Will it still be a mind-blowing quality release like I originally thought or with this relisten it's ... read more

The Beatles - Rubber Soul
70

So here's the album that people could no longer deny that the Beatles were changing. They were shifting their sound from the charming boy band pop rock to a more mature folky soul vibe though they admit that they weren't at the level of the acclaimed soul artists of the day. Still, they were inspired and felt the need to change sonic direction with the new found freedom and time they have. They got room to experiment and explore a little before the concert tours and commitments come ... read more

Moacir Santos - Coisas

A nice samba Jazz release that does the job.

Jackson C. Frank - Jackson C. Frank

Pretty captivating listen for just a man and his guitar.

Recs:
- Kimbie
- Yellow Walls
- Here Come the Blues
- Milk and Honey
- My Name is Carnival
- Just Like Anything
- Marlene
- The Visit

Art Blakey - Free for All
85

An excellent hard bop with outstanding drumming in particular along with the excellence of the other instrumentals making for a thoroughly enjoyable listen.

Recs:
- Free for All
- The Core
- Pensativa

Otis Redding - Otis Blue: Otis Redding Sings Soul
65

Otis has a distinct soulful voice that's immediately recognizable. And while I enjoyed his efforts, due to it feeling kinda generic with all of the covers, I didn't enjoy it as much as I would have liked.

Recs:
- A Change is Gonna Come
- I've Been Loving You Too Long
- Shake
- My Girl

Nina Simone - I Put a Spell on You
95

It's such a pleasure to revisit the music legend known as Nina Simone. What a woman, and what a commanding voice complimented by jazzy orchestral instrumentals. She never not astonishes me every time I hear her distinct tones and emotion. Adored everything except for Ne Me Quite Pas. Nina singing in a foreign language felt a bit weird for me. Otherwise a masterful release.

Rahsaan Roland Kirk - I Talk With The Spirits
75

I liked the tunes that were easier to digest since I listen to music for pleasure more than anything, but this was a nice effort from Roland.

Recs:
- Serenade to a Cuckoo
- I Talk With the Spirits
- Ruined Castles
- Django
- My Ship

Grant Green - Idle Moments
80

A quality listen with a lasting atmosphere that's easy to get lost in.

Recs:
- Idle Moments
- Jean de Fleur
- Django

Wayne Shorter - Juju
60

Sure this is a quality jaz album showcasing their skill. To me though I just see it as just another Jazz album with nothing distinct drawing my attention past general interest.

Phil Ochs - I Ain't Marching Anymore
60

A charming anti war folk release though fine for a pallet cleanser with a good message, I found myself wanting to listen to something else rather quickly.

Recs:
The title track.

Wes Montgomery - Bumpin'
85

A very satisfying underappreciated listen. If you're into cool jazz with orchestral elements then I highly recommend you check this gem out.

Recs:
- Bumpin'
- A Quiet Thing
- Con Alma
- The Shadow of Your Smile
- Mi Cosa
- Here's That Rainy Day
- Just Walkin'

The Skatalites - Ska Boo-Da-Ba
65

Sorry for the small break, got sucked into the endless void of endless amounts of content to consume on the Internet. I'm back, for now.

These are some nice ska instrumentals that I generally enjoyed, but it's nothing all that special.

Recs:
- China Town
- Skaravan
- Lawless Street
- Ghost Town

Paul Desmond - Glad to Be Unhappy
60

While the distinct mood has my attention initially, the lack of variation lost my interest as the listen went along. The girl on the cover is a stunner though.

Recs:
- Glad to be Unhappy
- Poor Butterfly

Horace Silver - Song for My Father (Cantiga para meu pai)
85

A very enjoyable Hard bop with some slower tracks to break things up. The instrumentation and chemistry is excellent and the vibes are good. The brass, piano, and drums work very well with each other. Makes for a fun listen whether for casual listening or to analyze like us nerds tend to do.

Recs:
- Song for My Father
- The Natives are Restless Tonight
- Calcutta Cutie
- The Kicker
- Que Pasa
- Sighin' and Cryin'
- Silver Threads Amount the Soul

Oscar Peterson - We Get Requests
90

Wow was this a satisfying listen. Fantastic arrangements with all of the class. Beautiful Jazz for the casual enthusist. Gets a bit redundant at times with the limited instruments to work with, but for a trio, it's hard to find jazz as engaging as this example. To be able to keep things fresh through the 10 tracks by playing with tone pace and focus really earns my respect for these chaps!

Recs:
- Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars (Corcovado)
- Days of Wine and Roses
- My One and Only Love

"@frogofprog of course, all the songs listed in the review are great including the all time classic in War Pigs. I just think as an album experience as a whole it could be a bit better."

"You are in for one hell of a ride if you're going to listen to it all the way through at once! Well worth the six hours of investment."

"@ScottShelby As for what's next for Zappa since I have listened to most of his Acclaimed stuff besides a couple of TMOI releases In likely to finish off that bands offerings before down the road see what Zappa has to offer in his more contentious releases."
On Frank Zappa - Hot Rats

"@musicfanboy You looked into that more than I ever cared to so I guess? I don't know. I do generally find slowcore rather boring to slog through, so your probably right."
On Terry Reid - Terry Reid
"@AidenBowe45 He reminds of Paul McCartney at points with how passionately he sings and the instrumental goes crazy. It's a fun album for sure!"
On Muddy Waters - After the Rain
"@AidenBowe45 I honestly am just too familiar with this kind of style of straightforward Blues, sure it's classic but I find it stale and uninteresting especially compared to other styles that bring more to the table of the genre that makes for more engaging listening."
On Herbie Hancock - Fat Albert Rotunda
"@AidenBowe45 Groovy, funky and takes you on a ride. I don't remember if it goes wildly off the track but I wouldn't be surprised if it did with an artist like Hancock at the wheel."

"@AidenBowe45 yeah basically. I'm not here to hear your lips flapping."
On Amon Düül II - Phallus Dei
"@AidenBowe45 I'm excited for whenever you do decide to listen to it, they put you on a wild ride that's the best of both worlds and reminds me why I regard Krautrock as one of my all time favorite genres to lose my mind to!"
On Eyeliner - Buy Now
"@AidenBowe45 I mean it's not the definitive vaporwave experience, but if you're a fan of the genre then there's definitely some solid stuff here."
On girl in red - if i could make it go quiet
"@AidenBowe45 I am likely not the intended audience since I am a grown ass 26 year old listening to these lyrics. I may not be fully aware of what the kiddos are into these days, but when I was an edgy teenager in middle school, shit like this banged for the girlies."
On Swans - Soundtracks for the Blind
"@OldTask This album is definitely geared towards the artsy fartsy folks that appreciate just how deep into the rabbit hole this experience takes them. Definitely takes an experienced or a very open ear to truly "get it." Not everyone does, but the ones that do praise this shit up and down like I do."
On Swans - Soundtracks for the Blind
"@Moosky This album is fit for a very particular meditative mindset you have to be in for the Inherent strangeness to pack as hard of a punch as it does. Like many albums I love this is like a sonic drug trip that is more to be experienced than enjoyed as regular music. This album has a legendary status because it goes deep into this surreal experimental soundscape unapologetically and not everyone is going to get it, but those who do are immensely rewarded. I recommend you to maybe expand your horizons and listen to ambient/Psychedelic/ experimental releases similar to this so your pallet is more used to what this amazing album has to offer. Cont."
On David Bowie - Station to Station
"@Jakeisthedoctor You mentioned that across the board I have wild takes, are there more recent examples that raises your eyebrows?"
On David Bowie - Station to Station
"@Jakeisthedoctor Man I really should delete and reevaluate these albums I reviewed in my early days when my taste wasn't nearly as refined yet expansive as it is now. Back in 2023 I was throwing my inexperienced taste into classics head first with no idea what I was talking about. It's part of the reason why I am exploring the 60s and 70s again along with bolstering my limited playlists. To great success too with my 60s playlist going from 90 tracks to over 750 and growing as I am now appreciative of the greatness that I am consuming. I promise when I get to these albums again down the road, I will likely have a more reasonable take. For now, just enjoy how unhinged I was in 2023."
On Vapora - Oceanside Mall
"@frogofprog oh yeah, Vapora. I definitely had mixed feelings with this artist. They had some genuinely great vaporwave along with...well ones that missed the mark. Yeah I was a bit more loose with my reviews back in 2023 just experimenting with how I liked to present my reviews. It results in some reviews I am still proud of to some I just go crazy on. It is also an era where I was still forming my tastes on like twenty+ genres at once so don't take my early reviews that seriously."
On Drake - Scorpion
"@Triplo Thanks! I don't often have something to say about an album these days past a standard passing observation, but popular releases from the 2010s are a good way to get be talking at least a little bit."
On Peter Gabriel - Peter Gabriel
"@RSmithFan What I meant was that this was the first album that felt like it was made in the eighties. Don't know why I phrased it that way either."
On Not Marshall - FRIDAY NIGHT A DRESS2IMPRESS MODEL HAS TO SHOW OFF HER NEW AFRO HAIRSTYLE
"@engar where? what? I don't see anything eyebrow raising."
On Fabrizio De André - Vol. 1°
"@I_love_chickenw 👍 Whatever you say bud. I'll keep on doing what I do regardless of your berating."
On Fabrizio De André - Vol. 1°
"@I_love_chickenw Good for them and the people that praise their writing. That's not the reason I fell in love with music so I don't focus on it. And that is just as fine as those who do the opposite and completely mute the music and gush over the writing. Different strokes, we all appreciate art in our own individual ways."
On Fabrizio De André - Vol. 1°
"@I_love_chickenw Maybe I'll appreciate that part of the experience when I decide to give a shit about the lyrics. Until then, those pink floyd classics offer an amazing sonic experience regardless of whatever they are yapping about."
