Ringo Starr - Look Up
65

For an 83 year old man going country with a little help from his friends, this is pretty decent. His monotone voice fits the pretty standard country sound and the writing is solid for what it is. Just competent all around and based on the reputation of some of his past works this is honestly a real solid effort.

I'm always super happy and appreciative that this man still continues to bless us with music even at his advanced age. He owes the world nothing and could have easily retired in ... read more

The Bangles - Different Light
75

I don't know what y'all got against this great release. There's more to it that's plenty enjoyable past the two familiar singles. Though that might just be my pop bias speaking.

Recs:
- Manic Monday
- Walking Down Your Street
- Walk Like an Egyptian
- Standing in the Hallway
- If She Knew What She Wants
- September Gurls
- Following

菊池桃子 [Momoko Kikuchi] - Ocean Side
80

Momoko offers a fantastic debut city pop release with a particularly strong second half.

Recs:
- Shadow Surfer
- Futari No Night Drive
- Seishun no Ijiwaru
- Evening Break
- So Many Dreams
- I Will

LAIDOFF - After Glow

Update:
Huh. I guess I was a very happy young man whenever I initially listened to this. Cause while I can consider some of the tunes enjoyable, I would hardly call this an AOTY contender like my initial review and rating may suggest. It's decent club disco, but nothing that grabs me and slaps me around. Not bad but could be way better. Thankfully their next release is a strong one.

China Crisis - Difficult Shapes & Passive Rhythms, Some People Think It's Fun To Entertain
60

An ok synthpop release with a few notable tracks.

Recs:
- No More Blue Horizons
- Feel to be Driven Away
- Red Sails

Herbie Hancock - Mr. Hands
60

Some nice smooth jazz fusion. Though I only really appreciated the opener, I never felt the need to skip ahead to the next song.

Jean-Michel Jarre - Équinoxe
60

A charming classic Electronic release that holds your attention throughout.

Recs:
- pt. 5
- pt. 6

Anthony Moore - Out
50

This doesn't do much for me.

Moolah - Woe, Ye Demons Possessed
80

Krautrock Experimental Bullshit has been a favorite of mine ever since that one Can album blew my expectations of what music can even be. This example may not be the most insane example that I have heard, but as usual I found it to be an enthralling listen front to back. They don't make it like they used to.

Frank Zappa - Waka/Jawaka
75

Another showcase of Zappa's genius expertise of Jazz fusion with a couple decent tracks to round out this pleasant experience. It may not be his best work, but the standard remains remarkably high.

Recs:
- Big Swifty (Literally predicted Taylor Swift)
- Waka/Jawaka

Badfinger - Magic Christian Music
75

Hmm. The sound of this band down to even the vocals reminds me of a certain band...can't put my thumb on it though...

Seriously though this sounds a bit too familiar at times they still have some distinction with some of the elements they utilize. I could dismiss them as the Beatles copy without the magic, but they do well enough of a job of it that I can't be too mad about it. Plus it helps heal the tears a bit of the millions of fans sad over the breakup. There's a number of ... read more

Ultimate Spinach - Behold & See
70

Damn I may only have made a strong impression from three tracks, but DAMN are they phenomenal examples of 60's psychedelia. That I just got to give props.

Recs:
- Mind Flowers
- Suite: Genesis of Beauty ( In Four Parts)
- Fifth Horseman of the Apocalypse

Cream - Fresh Cream
60

Cream makes a solid statement with their debut with a quality blue rock tracklist that unfortunately does little for me personally other an a few tracks.

Recs:
- I Feel Free
- Sweet Wine
- Cat's Squirrel

The Rolling Stones - The Rolling Stones
60

The Stones debut is a charmer with covers of blues and rock and roll classics that is ok for what it is but pales compared to what awaits this legendary band in the releases to come.

Recs:
- Mona ( I need You Baby)
- Now I've Got a Witness
- Little by Little
- Walking the Dog

Bill Evans & Jim Hall - Undercurrent
80

A gorgeous cool jazz record that holds a poignant effectiveness with its soft touch even after all these years later

Recs:
- I Hear a Rhapsody
- Dream Gypsy
- Romain
- Stairway to the Stars
- I'm Getting Sentimental Over You

Yo La Tengo - May I Sing with Me
60

With their early release YLT offers a mix of punk and slacker rock with that hypnotizing guitar. Only a few tracks really hit for me but this was not a bad effort that displays a lot of potential.

Recs:
- Mushroom Cloud of Hiss
- Some Kinda Fatigue
- Sleeping Pill

Gold Panda - Half of Where You Live
65

A decent IDM/ Micro house release that has a few tracks captivate me to some level.

Recs:
- Brazil
- My Father in Hong Kong 1961
- S950
- Reprise

Jelly Crystal - Freak Show
70

A funky psychedelic good time from Jelly Crystal.

Recs:
- Never Met a Cloud That I Didn't Like
- Freak Show
- Lost Vegas
- Bloody Mary

beabadoobee - Fake It Flowers
50

Heard a thing or two about Beabadoobee. With this first real impression of her work beyond a stray track heard on TikTok I found it to be an ok listen but nothing really stood out to me.

WTRGRL - Drïpsody
65

Y'all like my new girlfriend? She's literally a siren and almost killed me when I went fishing out to sea that one time. I fed her some fish and now I can't get rid of her!

I thought this album would be more like the fantastic track "Drop Coda" and less Brat summer, but it's not bad though the brattiness is a bit hit or miss.

Recs:
- Drip Coda
- Cash My Style
- Heroine
- Party Alone

"@frogofprog of course, all the songs listed in the review are great including the all time classic in War Pigs. I just think as an album experience as a whole it could be a bit better."

"@ScottShelby As for what's next for Zappa since I have listened to most of his Acclaimed stuff besides a couple of TMOI releases In likely to finish off that bands offerings before down the road see what Zappa has to offer in his more contentious releases."

"@AidenBowe45 He reminds of Paul McCartney at points with how passionately he sings and the instrumental goes crazy. It's a fun album for sure!"
On Muddy Waters - After the Rain
"@AidenBowe45 I honestly am just too familiar with this kind of style of straightforward Blues, sure it's classic but I find it stale and uninteresting especially compared to other styles that bring more to the table of the genre that makes for more engaging listening."
On Herbie Hancock - Fat Albert Rotunda
"@AidenBowe45 Groovy, funky and takes you on a ride. I don't remember if it goes wildly off the track but I wouldn't be surprised if it did with an artist like Hancock at the wheel."

"@AidenBowe45 I mean it's not the definitive vaporwave experience, but if you're a fan of the genre then there's definitely some solid stuff here."
On girl in red - if i could make it go quiet
"@AidenBowe45 I am likely not the intended audience since I am a grown ass 26 year old listening to these lyrics. I may not be fully aware of what the kiddos are into these days, but when I was an edgy teenager in middle school, shit like this banged for the girlies."
On Swans - Soundtracks for the Blind
"@OldTask This album is definitely geared towards the artsy fartsy folks that appreciate just how deep into the rabbit hole this experience takes them. Definitely takes an experienced or a very open ear to truly "get it." Not everyone does, but the ones that do praise this shit up and down like I do."
On Swans - Soundtracks for the Blind
"@Moosky This album is fit for a very particular meditative mindset you have to be in for the Inherent strangeness to pack as hard of a punch as it does. Like many albums I love this is like a sonic drug trip that is more to be experienced than enjoyed as regular music. This album has a legendary status because it goes deep into this surreal experimental soundscape unapologetically and not everyone is going to get it, but those who do are immensely rewarded. I recommend you to maybe expand your horizons and listen to ambient/Psychedelic/ experimental releases similar to this so your pallet is more used to what this amazing album has to offer. Cont."
On David Bowie - Station to Station
"@Jakeisthedoctor You mentioned that across the board I have wild takes, are there more recent examples that raises your eyebrows?"
On David Bowie - Station to Station
"@Jakeisthedoctor Man I really should delete and reevaluate these albums I reviewed in my early days when my taste wasn't nearly as refined yet expansive as it is now. Back in 2023 I was throwing my inexperienced taste into classics head first with no idea what I was talking about. It's part of the reason why I am exploring the 60s and 70s again along with bolstering my limited playlists. To great success too with my 60s playlist going from 90 tracks to over 750 and growing as I am now appreciative of the greatness that I am consuming. I promise when I get to these albums again down the road, I will likely have a more reasonable take. For now, just enjoy how unhinged I was in 2023."
On Vapora - Oceanside Mall
"@frogofprog oh yeah, Vapora. I definitely had mixed feelings with this artist. They had some genuinely great vaporwave along with...well ones that missed the mark. Yeah I was a bit more loose with my reviews back in 2023 just experimenting with how I liked to present my reviews. It results in some reviews I am still proud of to some I just go crazy on. It is also an era where I was still forming my tastes on like twenty+ genres at once so don't take my early reviews that seriously."
On Drake - Scorpion
"@Triplo Thanks! I don't often have something to say about an album these days past a standard passing observation, but popular releases from the 2010s are a good way to get be talking at least a little bit."
On Peter Gabriel - Peter Gabriel
"@RSmithFan What I meant was that this was the first album that felt like it was made in the eighties. Don't know why I phrased it that way either."
On Not Marshall - FRIDAY NIGHT A DRESS2IMPRESS MODEL HAS TO SHOW OFF HER NEW AFRO HAIRSTYLE
"@engar where? what? I don't see anything eyebrow raising."
On Fabrizio De André - Vol. 1°
"@I_love_chickenw 👍 Whatever you say bud. I'll keep on doing what I do regardless of your berating."
On Fabrizio De André - Vol. 1°
"@I_love_chickenw Good for them and the people that praise their writing. That's not the reason I fell in love with music so I don't focus on it. And that is just as fine as those who do the opposite and completely mute the music and gush over the writing. Different strokes, we all appreciate art in our own individual ways."
On Fabrizio De André - Vol. 1°
"@I_love_chickenw Maybe I'll appreciate that part of the experience when I decide to give a shit about the lyrics. Until then, those pink floyd classics offer an amazing sonic experience regardless of whatever they are yapping about."
