I remember finding out that Soulja Boy was insanely prolific and was desperately trend chasing, and I'm very glad that I investigated because there are so many trash masterpieces like this one. Brrrrr Squid Game!
 - Honestly, Nevermind

I couldn't finish it. Drake's latest album exemplifies the old adage "just because it's different doesn't mean its good." My Algebra class at the end of the day had more energy than this supposed dance album. Everything about Honestly, Nevermind reeks of mediocrity, a mediocrity so mind numbing it can kill your hope in humanity. A little extreme, but considering Drake was once considered one of the top artists in the game, this fall from grace is both disheartening (a little funny for ... read more

The amount of modern indie records inspired by these songs is a lot higher than hipsters would like to admit.
 - Umber

1989 was a banner year for crudely named punk bands releasing maniacal albums. Bitch Magnet's Umber acts as a sort of template for many sounds that would come to prominence in the 90s, especially the noisy side of post rock/ post hardcore that would dominate underground records and Rate Your Music charts for years to come. History aside, this is a really fantastic rock record with really good pacing.

I had no faith in this album. The Rate Your Music Genre was "Big Music," which was defined by enormous anthemic rock, which in the 80s was at its horrifying peak. I was expecting some schlock of the highest degree, and while it is certainly cheesy, it somehow works. It's so heart on its sleeve, so over the top, so laden with blaring saxophone solos, that it's "Big Music," sound ended up winning me over. It's not perfect, but it's ridiculously charming.

About

Music and film enthusiast! I love pretty much everything under the sun, though have a particular fondness for jazz and punk.

I’m an amateur film director and think that we need weirder soundtracks in movies.
