Drowned in Sound

Put simply, 'Since I Left You' is this year's 'Odelay', this year's 'Homework'; oh, to hell with it, Album of the Year so far - it's such a dead cert I had to use capitals.

There's little doubt to Since I Left You's status as one of the most intimate and emotional dance records that isn't vocal-based.

The Avalanches have managed to build a totally unique context for all these sounds, while still allowing each to retain its own distinct flavor. As a result, Since I Left You sounds like nothing else.

With no gaps between its 18 tracks, just a relentless party groove, Since I Left You is so madly glad, it’s demented ... Gravity, in every sense, is abandoned. Go with their flow.

The Avalanches have found their irreverent, bittersweet take on pop turned into one of the albums of the year.

Every track on their debut is a restless, ever-morphing collage of R&B, pop, and rock samples that continually keeps you off balance.

"Did I ever tell you the story about cowboys, and m-midgets, and the Indians and fron-frontier psychiatrist?", you haven't. It's been nearly 2 fucking decades! I swear, if I die before I hear this incredible story, I'm gonna be an angry ghost like Ava! >:(

In the meantime, we got Since I Left You, a stand-out, once-in-a-lifetime, magical experience that we may never ever see be attempted again. It's quite odd and funny to even imagine the existence of such an album being ... read more
The age old debate. One that the titans clashed over for a millenia. A question that destroyed armies, brought empires to their knees, and ruined the best of friendships. The question being, what is the better album. Wildflower or Since I Left You.

It's Wildflower.

I will say this though, the title track is the best Avalanches song, one of my all time favorite songs in fact. The rest of the album falls on its face at times.

While Wildflower's standard Verse-Chorus structure helps it to keep ... read more
As far as sample based music goes, I have a pretty slim number of records that really appeal to me. And now, Since I Left You has become one of those records. There are thousands of samples used throughout this record; some from television programs, some from vintage jazz albums. And all of them are laid out to fuse into a behemoth of sampling mastery. The repetition of a single phrase, that can be found on many tracks, keeps a playful tone to the record, while the airy and lighthearted ... read more
On Since I Left You, The Avalanches used nothing but thousands of different samples to create one of the most magical and immaculately created plunderphonics albums ever made. Every track is just extremely fun, creative and adventurous. Essentially, this album takes the ideology that using samples is "stealing", and straight up kicks it in the gut. I could never guess where any of these samples came from but the fact that all these random fragments of songs came together to create ... read more
Some of my friends reviewed this album and they gave it great scores so I decided to give it a try. Now that I am listening to it for the second time, I'm really overwhelmed and surprised. It's such a different experience, fresh and also really beautiful. I'm in love with this, you have to check it out!
