Drowned in Sound

Put simply, 'Since I Left You' is this year's 'Odelay', this year's 'Homework'; oh, to hell with it, Album of the Year so far - it's such a dead cert I had to use capitals.

100
AllMusic

There's little doubt to Since I Left You's status as one of the most intimate and emotional dance records that isn't vocal-based.

95
Pitchfork

The Avalanches have managed to build a totally unique context for all these sounds, while still allowing each to retain its own distinct flavor. As a result, Since I Left You sounds like nothing else.

Spin

With no gaps between its 18 tracks, just a relentless party groove, Since I Left You is so madly glad, it’s demented ... Gravity, in every sense, is abandoned. Go with their flow.

90
NME

The Avalanches have found their irreverent, bittersweet take on pop turned into one of the albums of the year.

75
Entertainment Weekly

Every track on their debut is a restless, ever-morphing collage of R&B, pop, and rock samples that continually keeps you off balance.

As far as sample based music goes, I have a pretty slim number of records that really appeal to me. And now, Since I Left You has become one of those records. There are thousands of samples used throughout this record; some from television programs, some from vintage jazz albums. And all of them are laid out to fuse into a behemoth of sampling mastery. The repetition of a single phrase, that can be found on many tracks, keeps a playful tone to the record, while the airy and lighthearted ... read more

An electronic-music masterpiece. So bright, colorful, creative and vivid. A one-of-a-kind feat that helped shape the whole sample-based/plunderphonics genre as we have it today. It would be best if they had really ended their studio release activities in this point.

Impressive. + 3500 samples and a dense cohesive album.
All songs are awesome (electricity is so beautiful)but it's a personal pleasure. This album cannot be liked if you don't open your mind or if you don't feel some emotions with music.

This album is the definition of a 🅱️OP

I just had the time of my life, this whole record is just one huge non-stop banger! There's so much care and thought put into it: they did everything to make every beat sound impactful and keep a perfect flow, and I have tons of respect for that.

No moment was wasted here, they just keep on surprising me and giving me reasons to love it. But besides hyping me up with constant bangers, this record also affects me emotionally: it reminds me of the ... read more

This album is a masterpiece.

I haven't heard anything like this in so long. Every song flows together excellently, and the overall mood that this album sets is true beauty and color in audio form. More than 3,000 samples were used for this project, which is extremely impressive, and is even more impressive that every sample on here that wouldn't really work in any other album... works!
