Put simply, 'Since I Left You' is this year's 'Odelay', this year's 'Homework'; oh, to hell with it, Album of the Year so far - it's such a dead cert I had to use capitals.
Simply put: Since I Left You is a brilliant collage of music, brilliantly pasted together.
There's little doubt to Since I Left You's status as one of the most intimate and emotional dance records that isn't vocal-based.
The Avalanches have managed to build a totally unique context for all these sounds, while still allowing each to retain its own distinct flavor. As a result, Since I Left You sounds like nothing else.
The Avalanches have found their irreverent, bittersweet take on pop turned into one of the albums of the year.
With no gaps between its 18 tracks, just a relentless party groove, Since I Left You is so madly glad, it’s demented ... Gravity, in every sense, is abandoned. Go with their flow.
Beautifully mixes up hundreds of third-party compositions into something somehow greater than the sum of its parts.
Since I Left You is a highly enjoyable concoction.
One of the most joyous and poignant party albums ever.
Every track on their debut is a restless, ever-morphing collage of R&B, pop, and rock samples that continually keeps you off balance.
Since I Left You is as sunny as an Australian summer, harnessing a wide range of music - soul, hip-hop, warped analog synths, disco, orchestral crescendos - with the new-toy joy of early sampling-based rap and a dance-music sensibility.
Okay, what is it with me listening to so many albums that are becoming my favourites of all time on first listen these past few days? I mean, I can’t say it’s a bad thing, but it’s a surprise nonetheless. Considering I’ve listened to this, Bocanada, and Loveless, all in the span of about three weeks, which have all entered in my top 5 favourite albums, is wild to me. Whatever the case, it’s cool to see that I’m finding so much music that I’m enjoying. ... read more
Original Review: Avalanches made this album in a studio... WITH A BUNCH OF SAMPLES
Original Score: 9/10
LAST REVIEW
This may or may not come as a surprise, but yes. This will be my last review on AOTY, and I have a couple of reasons for this decision. One, I'm not as passionate about reviewing as I once was. Some of it is because I've written so many reviews, but a lot of it is because I started to get self-conscious about my writing. To me, I saw it as lazy and uninspired. A lot ... read more
The Avalanches have quite the career, as their quality has always maintained it’s high standard. “Since I Left You” was the start of it all, kickstarting an everlasting journey to creating some of the best pieces of music of all time. Although I prefer it’s successor, “Wildflower’, “Since I Left You” has some interesting ideas and was the first to come from the group, and is undoubtedly a stunning album.
Welcome to my 200th review! Thank you all ... read more
Det var bra, jag gillar den här typen av musik och omslaget är väldigt fint. Det enda negativa var att det ibland upprepade sig lite för mycket och alla ljuden var inte överdrivet najs att höra på. Borde ksk lyssna igen!
