Pinned Review

Nevermind single-handedly boosted Nirvana—and the grunge genre—into the mainstream. The late legend Kurt Cobain played a huge role popularizing grunge, with his catchy guitar riffs, memorable hooks, and his slurred, beaten-up vocal delivery. This record is the epitome of those factors. Some of the most famous and greatest alternative rock songs are on here – they latch onto your mind immediately and never come off. Even some of the deeper cuts, which are quiet and moody, have ... read more

The Avalanches - Since I Left You
100

If I wanna feel good, one spin of Since I Left You is enough. As DJ Shadow released his groundbreaking debut, Endtroducing, a few years prior, an Australian duo named The Avalanches decided to make their own plunderphonics album. Endtroducing's specialty was creating a very gloomy atmosphere out of crates of old, dusty vinyl LPs. On the other hand, Since I Left You takes those records and creates a party out of them instead. And man, it must be one of, if not, the best dance album ... read more

David Bowie - ★ [Blackstar]

David Bowie – easily one of the greatest musical minds of our time. His stacked discography comprises tons of classics—Ziggy Stardust, Low, Station to Station, Heroes—you name it. Following his 2013 comeback album, The Next Day, Bowie was back in the studio to record what would be his last album. You see, in 2014, Bowie was diagnosed with liver cancer, which would soon turn out to be terminal. That's why he decided to make his swan song, Blackstar. But instead of trying ... read more

JAY-Z - The Blueprint

Even before this album, Jay-Z was already a superstar. He had a bunch of popular hits and was a successful businessman. Nevertheless, he still wanted to prove that he's the king of New York. So, with collaborations such as Eminem, Timbaland, and up-and-coming Chicago producer Kanye West, he released his magnum opus, The Blueprint, on September 11, 2001. 😬 Some might prefer his boom bap debut, Reasonable Doubt, but I personally prefer The Blueprint. His lyricism and flows are sharper and ... read more

The spiritual successor to Yeezus. Like that album, it shows Kanye experimenting with production and song structure. Unlike that album though, it doubles the track count, increasing its length as well. Still, both albums work and include incredible and catchy bangers. The Life of Pablo does that better in my opinion. Its sporadic nature makes the highlights (eh?) hit even harder. Even if you don't like half of the tracklist of TLOP, you still have 10 tracks to return to. And next to the ... read more

Kanye West - Yeezus

Easily his most left-field album at that point. Instead of the chipmunk soul style he rose to fame with, Kanye embraces a more experimental soundscape on Yeezus. Instead of high-pitched soul samples, he incorporates more distortion and industrial noises. And it actually works for the most part! The noisy opener "On Sight" sets the tone from the jump with these copius amounts of distortion. Every track keeps twisting and turning through lots of different styles, making it a very manic ... read more
