'And if I told your secrets
The world'll know money can't stop suicidal weakness'
That is some usual suspects, fight club 6th sense level plot twist. I do not hear enough hype for 'U'. It perfectly depicts the dichotomy of Kendricks being. Throughout this album, Kendrick's use of telling stories from other perspectives is phenomenal. But 'U'... That is something else: potentially the best lyricism ever. Truly genius.
The smoke alarm beep sample has to be the best sample ever. It completely summarises this song / album. To listen to the persistent beeping Is irritating, but Earl expresses that to change the batteries is a task too trivial to be worth the little motivation required. That is what reaching the bottom sounds like: a smoke alarm out of battery.
As you pass through life, you'll meet people and hear stories which tell a tale of their home city. A glimpse through a strangely tinted window into another childhood; another life. This album, however, this represents Compton. I have looked through a window as clear as limpid water into Kendricks upbringing, and Kendrick has perfectly depicted every yoke and beauty of life. But no song does this as well as 'Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst'.
This album reminds me of that movie trope where there is some exmiliatry psycho who goes on a vengeful killing spree. Not John Wick, more like dead man's shoes. But maybe even more disturbing.
I once gave this 41/100, said it was a 'tragic waste of time' but no, this is actually really wholesome. I like that idea, 'warm earth music for plants' :) makes me feel warm inside.
