I haven’t listened to thank u, next in a bit and remember it as being more mainstream pop than it was. I also remember it as more similar to Sweetener, but the beats are much simpler and there’s not as much vocal layering. In the context of Ariana’s discography, it’s a fairly stripped down record.
I think the lyrics had much more impact with the simplicity of the production, which is what she needed to do on this album given her personal life. It’s a classic ... read more
I love this sound for Ariana, and revisiting Sweetener as a full album years later was actually very peaceful. There’s such a warmth to the album, and it felt like an intimate conversation with a friend. I really appreciated how much she switches through her registry, her range on this album was phenomenal. Easily the defining album of her career. This entire era was so authentically crafted, and thinking back on it now feels like a fever dream of an era (“Pete Davidson”). I ... read more
Listening to Future Nostalgia today proves to me it wasn’t just a moment in the pandemic. I think Dua Lipa introduces herself well on her self-titled debut album, but I don’t think it’s anything groundbreaking. It reminds me of Sheree Whitfield saying (on Real Housewives of Atlanta), “I thought it was fun; I liked the beat.” I am kind of shocked that this is one of the most streamed albums on Spotify… for me, it didn’t really have anything that would make me keep coming back to this album.

I used to think that Katy's career was an unfortunate victim of the radio-to-streaming transition in the music industry, but I'm starting to wonder if Teenage Dream was a one-off fluke. She is a 40 year old woman trying to sound like gen-z to fit in, and that is EXACTLY what is sounds like (derogatory). I'm shocked that this got released, but at the same time, I'm really not. I would've paid to be a fly on the wall in that record studio because somebody lied to her ... read more
